Authentic Woods KD (Knock Down) 10' by 16' Coop Build

 Never incubated before?

Never had chickens before much less done any incubating. I had thought to start with either day olds or laying hens depending on when I get the coop build done, this accelerates that plan big time.

My sister gets a dozen eggs a week from their "landlord", she sent a picture of the first dozen each was a different colour, put ideas in my mind.

In with both feet!!
but....Don't let anyone pressure you into getting live animals before you are ready.

I have done a lot of reading here including the threads that start with "n chickens arriving May whatever, just starting to plan where I will keep them".

Not my style, I like to read, research, think, plan, execute. Too old to get ahead of myself, made those mistakes back in the day.

Same here.....so you might want to decline the hatching eggs.

That thought has crossed my mind and lingers. My sister live on Vancouver Island and only comes once a year so it is tempting... No dates yet for their arrival I will see how the build goes and decide when they tell me their dates.

Well, you've got some time to think.....and at least you'll see your sis, whether she brings hatching eggs or not.

Keep in the back your mind that they grow like weeds and will need that proper place to live in a short time after hatching.

Have you started building the Woods yet?JT

If the coop and run are not ready I will decline the offer.

I will pickup the frame boards and battens Sunday and will start the coop Monday evening, my plan to spend a couple of hours each evening until it is done. There are 14 sections for the complete build so manageable chunks which is good. Once done I will assemble and then start the run.

The build approach seems straight forward but the first section will tell the tale, will start with the two back side walls. Once I get these done I will know how long it will take so next week will be interesting.

X2! The chickens will be the cheapest part of your project, you will have many opportunities to get different ones. Enjoy your own method, take your time to do the build without stress and you will be much happier when you can leisurely shop around for chickens! Good luck, this is really a great project!

I just realized I made a change to my plan to use 1" by 4" pine boards but did not explain.

In discussion with my miller about cladding I decided to use battens. When I thought about the look I realized that a 4" width would result in 2" of batten then 2" of board then 2" of batten repeating over all wall surfaces. Quickly realized that it would be a waste of material and would look odd. I then switched to 1" by 6" boards which means 2" of batten then 4" of board then 2" of batten repeating. Better look and less battens so reduced cost.
