Autism and pesticieds!

we had the prof explain time and again the difference between correlation and causation, and some people still didn't get it.

I had a science teacher explain it this way....

If you survey all the people who had car accidents, you will find that a vast majority of them will have eaten carrots within the 2 week period before their accident. That DOES NOT mean that carrots cause people to crash their cars.

I agree. How many people freak out if their kids get dirty or if a ray of sunshine hits their kids skin without using SPF 4000?

Throw the kids outside in the sun and let them play in the dirt!

My child has autism. I love to hear relevant scientific information. Unfortunately, most of the comments I hear when I am out & about town are guesses based on rumors and second hand info. I would venture that most of the people I hear speaking about autism have never read ANYTHING about it. Twelve lines in a sidebar of the newspaper doesn't count. I have read books & medical journals about autism. I believe it is very complicated. If it was really caused by one thing, we would understand that cause.
A gal I buy produce from has decided not to immunize her 5 kids because of something that her neighbor told her! Lovely. Brilliant.

I know exactly what you are talking about.

As for a single cause, I do believe vitamin D plays a primary role. Based on my research and personal experience I do also believe their is a genetic component. I know a lot of autistic children that have at least one parent or grand parent with bipolar disorder, depression or other form of brain cooties.

There are a lot of things, including autism, that we really don't know the cause of. But we do know that a great many chemicals, such as pesticides, herbicides, many food additives, etc., have both known and unknown ill effects. It seems to me, that if you know something is bad for you, it's a good idea to stop using it, whether it specifically causes autism, cancer, ADHD, or any other specific ailment, or not. For example, it's well known that mercury is toxic. We don't know everything bad that mercury does. But we sure know enough already to know we shouldn't be eating it.

We tend to let the big industries decide what we eat, drink, breathe, put on our skins, etc. We take their word for it that it's safe. Products contain what the government has decided is a "safe" level of toxins. That lotion only has a teeny bit of this toxin, and that pepper only has a little toxic residue, and those amounts alone probably wouldn't do much. But they aren't alone. There are toxins on, and in, so many different things, and they accumulate, and interact with each other. We don't even know yet all the ways they interact, probably never will. There are simply too many new and complex chemicals and drugs being used, and they haven't all been tested to see what happens when they combine. They can't all be tested that way, there are too many.

Meanwhile, we do know that food without toxic pesticides on it isn't harmful. (as long as you aren't allergic to it, anyway) We know it won't hurt you not to ingest mercury. It won't hurt you not to eat herbicides. It won't hurt you if you do eat wholesome, natural, nutritious foods, and get plenty of vitamins and minerals.

It's a no-brainer to me, and I don't understand why so many people don't seem to get this. Not just for prevention of autism, but for all the other weird things happening to people, particularly children.

Oh, and don't forget, some things don't become apparent for years, sometimes decades. Like the women who took that drug that caused their daughters to have cancer when they were young adults. Some environmental toxins are like that, too. You could be exposed, not show any outward damage, but have something wrong with children you have afterward. Things that may not show up right away.

You can't avoid everything bad, but there are plenty of things you can avoid. It just makes sense to me, to do so, when you can.

I'm pretty sure my sons are autistic at least in part because of genetic reasons. I'd bet money on it. One side of my husband's family are all kind of autistic acting and my husband would be diagnosed with an ASD if he were in elementary school today.

It's not too big a deal for us because they are high functioning and all of us have some sensory issues so they fit right in around here, but I know that it's really tough for a lot of families. That is why I am very pro-awareness. It's hard enough without all the crazy BS from people who have no idea.

As a person with Aspbergers.... High functioning Autism and a husband and a son who is autistic... I really get it... I think everyone should get Tony Attwoods video that has to work with children.

Unlike autism , adhd is easily overdiagnosed as family drs and peds can diagnose in office with barely any tests usually just questionares. Autism is more intense testing though some kids who òutgrow`autism I wonde rif they actually had it, I`ve read stories about kids who were diagnosed ar 2 then by 4 they were fine! My son ( not the one with autism) was non verbel, hard to engage and really just sat and stared most of the time for the first few years, heck you could place him down on the floor at a year and come back 10 mins later and he`d still be in the same spot . He grew out of most of the behavours and with speech theropy he was talking so people could understand him by 6.Now he is a normal 8 year old other then a IEP at school he`s normal.
