I just want to put my penny in here. I get that many of you are able to save by building it yourself, but if you're hiring someone to do it for you, you are paying for their professionalism and labor on top of materials. No different than hiring a professional to build you a shed, deck, or gazebo. It's going to cost, but yeah you can always save by building it yourself. There do seem to be a lot of prefab easy to put together options, so I recommend people going for that to save.
Now my other penny is this. Where I'm at we don't have raccoons, but we do have coyotes, bobcats, and mountain lions and just chicken wire as a barrier has held up for over a decade. The biggest thing to make sure of though is that everything is properly secured, and that you put the chicken wire at least 6 inches into the ground to prevent predators from being able to dig underneath. Again can't speak for raccoons here, just one testimony out of the many for people considering chicken wire.
