I have just as much snow but when my hubby and I built our coop, we knew to put a roof on it. I wouldn't have it any other way when we get feet of snow every winter

I have a roof over my run. My coops are inside the run. I've also got tarps around the run to keep snow out. What I'm saying is the wire fencing that was used is not hardware cloth and the sparrows come in to the run. I do not have the hand strength to fix hardware cloth to my run especially in the middle of winter - it wouldnt be doable for me in the warmest temps. Unfortunately, not everyone has a hardware cloth run.

Easier said than done if your run isn't made with hardware cloth and the sparrows are always present plus it's the middle of winter with snow up to up the back of your knees.

My post was because it's not always as easy as locking them up. My run is 20x16 and 8' high to the rafters. It wasn't feasible at the time or easy to wrap in hardware cloth. So, we opted for the next best thing. I regret not having our building crew add hw cloth, but that's the past. I will hope and that we don't have issues with bird flu.
It just seems like there is one thing and then another to worry about.

HWC seems possessed sometimes too- especially if you have taken off a glove for a moment, it attacks-lol.

We are trying to source fencing to complete the run fence. Currently we have chain link that is short at 4’. But it is hard to find fencing. We’ve been able to roof our run over the past 3 years. With the short fence chickens can get out. So we put up fine deer netting, secured with long pieces of wood to the roof posts. It works well, but is not perfect. Bc it is fine/thin, it can get broken, but having the long strips of wood helps keep it up. So, adding something like deer netting can be a possible option if something is needed quickly to keep out small birds. When we have chicks in the run, they can get out of the chain links. So, we use a stiffer green plastic garden fencing with small diamond openings zip tied to the chain link to cover the large chain link openings. The zip ties break down over time, but we only need the green fencing up for part of the year.

I just got some deer netting, but am dreading working with it. Then of course, we got 2' of snow dumped on us.

The presence now in Florida really worries me. I rehome and sometimes take in duck rescues -- my son just took in a feral rooster. We have to stop doing so until this threat is over, to protect our existing ducks as best we can. We don't have sparrows, but I do have cheeky wrens that go into the coop every day for their breakfast.

I'm super bummed. I wanted to get turkey poults this spring and have free range turkeys for a few months... I'm now second guessing that with avian flu now in Indiana at a turkey farm.

I'm in a similar situation Crazy Maizie -- plus the cost of hardware cloth is prohibitive. We do use it under the coops but I wince at the thought of having to make a hardware cloth run.

Half of my run is covered right now. Half isn't because its only 3 ft tall and we have to be able to get inside. Will see how things go I guess and keep them a little closer to home for now. What a PITA.
