Got it, that makes sense. Not necessarily. A lot of waterfowl can be infected and show no signs of illness and are able to go about their normal actions, migration and all. If all of the waterfowl that contracted it died, I don't think it would spread so far and wide.
Not that I ever knew of! Funny, first time I ever had chicks shipped (last Oct) & I got a form in the mail a couple months later asking for the hatcheries certs. You have to report buying chicks to the state ag dept?
Maybe the hatcheries are monitored? Not that I ever knew of! Funny, first time I ever had chicks shipped (last Oct) & I got a form in the mail a couple months later asking for the hatcheries certs.I called the hatchery & they said just send them the invoice, it has their NPIP info on it. So I sent that out to the CT DOA & another month or so later I got the same form back stamped 'released from quarantine'.
I still really have no idea what or why. I assumed the hatchery sent something to the state. But why wouldn't they just send the NPIP info with it? The only other thing I could think was the Post Office did it? I really have no idea & thought it was normal till everyone keeps asking the same thing as you when I tell my HPAI story.![]()
We did the same and reseeded. It was really needed after all of the flooding we've had this year.On the bright side…at least the grass seed that I put down earlier this month is finally starting to grow![]()
I'd love to see pictures! Sounds like a great idea!I haven't caught up but wanted to throw out an idea in case you haven't come up with anything yet...
I have a 1200sf run with netting over the top. I got a call from the Dept of Ag that they culled 155 birds near me & I should lock mine up. So, what I did was get a couple cattle panels & covered them with clear plastic shower curtains. & then I covered the open side with small, plastic deer netting to keep the song birds out. It's worked very well here & the birds are happy enough & safer. I just hope it goes away quickly.
ETA: I went over to the neighbors with a dozen eggs & explained the hoop houses too, lol.
Some states seem to monitor more closely than others. I think Ohio is more in the middle, but during an outbreak they can request that kind of info and hatcheries have it. When I was getting NPIP the guy that came from the Ohio Poultry Association told me (last year) that if any birds tested positive for AI in my flock they would pull all of the info about where my birds came from that they could and I would be asked to provide the rest. Compensation would be provided for each bird that they depopulated if that were to happen, but only if I cooperated with all of their investigations.Maybe the hatcheries are monitored?
Yes. I have a neighbor who lives a few blocks away from me keeping their chickens in this setup:Avian Influenza was just identified in my very own county. I’m starting to worry since we get a ton of crows, hawks, and other birds not to mention our large pond attracts ducks, herons, and geese. I have no way to cover my run and my birds stopped free ranging. I’m thinking it’s gonna wander over here soon. My neighbors flock has bad bio security and I’m worried their carelessness might cause mine to get it. Does anyone else have some of these issues?
Could be. If it didn't happen for chicks shipped in Oct I would have thought they were checking in because of HPAI. I really just don't know.Maybe the hatcheries are monitored?
I will get pics when I go out there to collect more eggs.We did the same and reseeded. It was really needed after all of the flooding we've had this year.
