Methinks that is a little harsh, friend... "trigger happy", no. This dog was not technically a "stray", IMHO, and it doesn't sound like this dog was killing for food. It sounds more that this dog was killing for sport. The woman did what she felt she had to do to keep her own beloved animals from being killed after more than one attack. There are some people who have no qualms at all about taking life -- any life. It does not sound as if this person is one of those. There is great responsibility that comes with owning and caring for animals, and sometimes that requires making difficult or painful decisions. I would advise the livestock owner to contact the dog owner (without the child present), explain the situation honestly, and hopefully the dog owner would think long and hard about whether or not they should get another dog, and if so, make the commitment to train it properly and keep it in their own space.
BTW, I am sorry about your losing your dog over carrots. How sad for your dog, and how horribly sad for you. I'm sorry for your loss.

your friend did the right thing, the safety of her animals in her property trumps any irresponsible owner right to a living pet...

I would go and tell her where the dog was burried, maybe the next generation can take a good lesson about pet ownership out of the whole incident.

First of all...she was not trigger happy. It sounds to me like she had no other choice. He had been there before and caused damage. I would not tell the neighbors anything about the death of the dog. I do feel sad for the little boy - the shelters are full of dogs and puppies that need homes. I would encourge them to adopt and KEEP THE DOG AT HOME - this should turn into a teachable moment for the Mom & little boy. Hopefully a little wisdom will be gained by the pain they are feeling...one can only hope. I love Dogs. I have my entire life. I have several they are ALL house dogs and live the best lives possible...but they are not people.

WE are responsible for their care and well being, not the other way around.

The woman did exactly what needed to be done. Sucks for the kid, but they should have kept their chicken (and whatever else) killing dog home!

In the rural area I grew up in (many, many years ago) if your dog was chasing the neighbors cows etc. and He shot the dog, you would thank him for saving you the task of having to shoot your own dog. Since it was expected if you had a dog that caused trouble, you would "deal with it". Those days and that understanding between neighbors is long gone, SSS is the solution. I've had to do that many times now. I once shot a dog in the middle of a killing frenzy to find it had one of those invisible fence electric collars on that prevents the dog from passing the buried wire------the batteries in the collar were long dead, the collar had indicator lights on it that gave you plenty of notice to replace the batteries. I felt sorry for the dog----not so much for the owners that like you, came around much later trying to find their "precious fido"

Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt all of your self-righteous condemnation on this fine Sunday morning.

I have neighbor that lives on the farm next to my farm. He has a very strict policy: If ANYTHING is caught killing livestock either on your own property, his property, or someone elses property he will kill it. Killing livestock is a death sentence around here! Last summer he shot my Aunts dog on her property killing her own goats. I do not allow my dogs to free range and never have. If I do and they get into livestock I full expect them to be shot. I take all measures to keep them on my property at all times. I have never known of them to chase or kill livestock but love them too much to risk it. I think your friend did the right thing. Sucks for the dog and the boy though. If my dog was shot I would not want to know but would want to know to stop looking for and loosing sleep over. Although I really doubt the owner of the chicken killing dog is loosing any sleep or they would have taken the proper measures to keep the dog contained.

Not to be confused with greymatter, you enjoyed shooting the dog and you enjoyed shooting every dog you ever shot. Mean old coots are like that.

Agree with previous poster that dogs are NOT people. That sounds like something city people would say

, like my friends who dont have children who think their dog is their kid. That is until they actually have a kid and then they take the dog to the pound because its a pain.

Where as this does sound like a very unfortunate circumstance, the OP friends actions were justified.
We raised laying hens and sold eggs for years, it was part of our livelihood. One time we had a stray dog come up. We kept it around for a while, then one day while my grandpa and I were walking out to our big hen house the dog came walking out of it with egg all over its mouth. Grandpa being the pragmatic person he was, dispatched the dog and said the lasting words "Got no use for an egg suckin dog".

When its your livelihood and a determining factor to having money in your pocket and food on your table the truth of the matter comes out in the wash. Dogs are dogs and people are people. Dogs are a luxury and a waste upon our society in my opinion. With so many PEOPLE starving and living in poverty in our own country and around the world our narcissistic society spends billions of dollars each year upon nothing more than an extension of our own vanity. Plus just think about all of the effluence that gets washed into our waterways from peoples yards and all of the waste left there. Disgusting.
Sorry, will get off the soap box now.
Have to ask what book you are talking about that is telling we are all going to hell? Cant be talking about the bible because there is very little reference to that place in the bible. Most of our ideas and notions and imagery of that place come from Dante's Inferno. Dont need the bible to tell me or justify to me that I am better than animals either.
Have a great day!
