B/B/S or Lavender?

Justus, those are just spectacular birds you have. I'm in love! I'm hatching some of Miss Prissy's eggs as I type. Baby Orpingtons are just so cute. I, too like the BBS, but the Lavender color is very appealing. The BBS are just so much better as far as type though.

I find the more challenging varieties to be the Blues, Buffs and Self Blues. Those seem to take more then just putting two birds together and calling it a breeding program. I guess most folks, including me are more partial to their best quality variety of Orps. For me that would be my Blacks, then followed by my Buffs and Blues. Their all alot of fun. One of most commented boyz isn't even a pure Orp. So, I like him alot too. Aren't chickens fun? lololol

I agree with Justus. I very much like the english type over the us type. I am working to pull in more of those birds with heavy feathering. But it takes time and it's not easy to find good black orps. Most folks likt eh BBS so they don't just have black pens. I think the lavs should be called steel grey - I think that is more of a proper name for the color. I get a lot of weird looks when I have to explain that, no they aren't actually purple.

I agree that not all of the Lav Orps really look lavender. In the UK they're called "pearl gray", maybe more people here in the US should call them by that name.

I wish English UK type would be another variety like Aussies are. Too many folks are buying them, and expecting to show them and do well. And they aren't an accepted new variety. There is a way bigger following for UK Orps then Aussies here, unfortunately I don't see it happening too soon. Even though the Australorps are accepted. You would think the UKers would beat out the Aussies. Maybe we're still holding a grudge against the English for the Taxation without representation. So they don't get represented here in our APA Shows.
Like here the Lavender is called self blue. UK call them Lavs. And a true Lavender IF shown here, will be shown against Self Blues. And judged to the APA standard. I don't see the APA changing a whole lot in the next few years. As breeders you have to choose between an APA showable bird or a non accepted bird, but gorgeous UK style.
Like I said, I like the birds I have only cause I know their a APA showable bird of quality. I am, like all you guys, very biased to what I raise. But, I am incorporating the UK in my APA line for a few traits. The lacing gene, broadness of chest and head. While keeping the longer back & tail. I only shown my birds twice. I enjoyed it. I think we can make birds that satisfy the best of both breeds and can be shown to top level quality.

Thanks for the compliments. I'm in love with my birds too. LOL. I agree with whoever said the Lavs should be called "pearl gray" or some such. That is more on the mark than "lavender." I love the UK breeds and would love to get a few of their other varieties over here. Hubby and I are looking into this. I have talked with the USDA about this several times over the last few weeks and I have all the information I need in order to import birds from the UK. Of course, if we do this, it will be only different variety of Orpingtons, as that is all we raise. I do have 6 BBS Orps that are 100% English and they are legal, but we imported hatching eggs that time...this time I will import birds if we decide to do it.

Wow! That's amazing! Do you want to say what varieties your considering importing? Also, how hard of a process was it to get that kind of approval from the USDA?

Put me at the top of your hatching egg list, btw!
