I think those of us EVERYWHERE have very limited options...

but it seems like there are more breeders west than east, to me at least.

Red is very similar to partridge, but there are generally two differences: In the brown series, partridge is often brown or buttercup, not the normal wild type. This is a rather minimal difference. My Cochins are brown, my Wyandottes are Buttercup. I suspect this because of the color of chick down. Second, Partridge has the pattern gene and Red does not. It is possible that Partridge in the US also carry Mahogany, which would account for most of their darker shades.

Hope that helped.

Dave- who has, and is breeding, the good silvers?

I'm doing the best that I can do. Those of us in the West have very limited options.

Basically, you have to go Jeanie in Montana or someone with the Superior lines, which I would guess are either closely related, the same, or somewhat related but would be very surprised if they are different lines. Dick Horstman has that line.

I have a roo from Jeanne and a roo from Superior. I don't know what strain Superior was using, but Jeanne told me that she started with Ideal stock

many years ago.

Since DaveK made it sound like good silvers are readily available, I was wondering where/who he was referring to.

ki4got, you are right, that we all have limited options. It seems to me that the best Dorkings are in the midwestern US, which is east to me

. You sure don't see them in shows here on the left coast.

I might be interested in some bantams too, down the road but think i need to concentrate on my LF first. the bantam cochins are my 'midgets of choice' 8) tho i have to say my oegb are the friendliest so far.

cross fingers... 8/21 shipped silver grey eggs made it to lockdown. 1 has pipped so far. (day 21)

has anyone noticed the dorking develop slower than some other breeds? all eggs set the same day, i've got 5 mutt bantams and 1 easter egger out and several more pipped, but only the one dorking pipped so far

Good luck, Karen!

Fingers, toes and even eyes are crossed for you!

Is it okay to ask where you got your eggs?

I've only hatched one dorking and it came out right on time - so I don't exactly have a wealth of information to draw on ...
