B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

well, one girl went with 2 of the color cross chicks (pullet/cockerel), but i still have 1 silver grey available, as well as a few more chicks. educated a lot of people about the dorking though. the girl that didn't sell got handled a lot yesterday so people could see just how mellow and hefty they really are.

i've got one guy coming down on thursday to bring a red girl to me in exchange for a younger colored pair, and possibly some sg/reds too, i think. so i'll have a mature red to give my roo from craig russell finally and he can stop waiting for babies to grow up. LOL

Pretty excited about our White Dorkings that we got from Yellow House. At least a couple of the cockerel's are trying to crow. Here is a video I took of them today trying to crow at the morning sun:

The set up is still in progress. Should have a brand new barn soon for these and our blacks and another shipment of whites that should be here in the next week or so. More video's to come soon.

Coloured??? (11 week old cockerel) He is growing tan feathers, brown feathers, green feathers, & white around his neck. The colors are actually brilliant. It's hard to see in the pictures. When he grows some more... I'll post additional pictures. Any ideas? Again... this is suppose to be Sand Hill (SG Dorking).

Silver Grey??? (11 week old cockerel)

My guess would be mixed colors on both. The colors do not look like SG.

My experience with Sand Hill Dorkings resulted in all kinds of unexpected colors. I wouldn't recommend them if you are trying to breed to the standard.

AMEN! I've got sandhill red and colored chicks growing out. NONE of the red pullets are anywhere near the standard, a few of the colored pullets might be, but the colored cockerels are nearly black right now, with a few new feathers coming in like yours, while the red cockerels seem to be OK for now... so my colored line is going to be one serious LONG TERM project i think, to see if i can get something that meets the standards and has a chance of reproducing itself to any degree. the reds? i'm giving up on the sandhill reds. i've got several pale orangey colored things (thing = what a friend called it, and it stuck to all the sandhill birds collectively) that are shaped like dorkings, but have no hackle striping, just black lacing at the bottom edge of the hackles. one is even paler than the rest, being more of a tannish looking thing. and the one sg pullet i got is pale for a sg, but at least close to what it should be...

Ok... well, at least I know what I'm looking at... "Thing" that narrows it down.

You did get quite the variety of color. All of mine were very dark (black) and are just now showing coloring. My (SG?) pullet is black with brown feathers... The picture of the first cockerel is the one i'm most curious about. His colors are really "loud" unlike what the picture shows. I was going to cull him early on but now... hmmmm? None of my birds look like "standard" coloring. I'm going to have to keep this one for sure now just to see what he turns out like. I'll post more of him as he grows in some more.

silver grey pullets should have no brown anywhere. the only color should be black/silver/grey/white, with the salmon colored breast. if there's any brown on the back and wings then it's either a red or colored. silver grey roos also should have NO brown/red anywhere on the body. they are black/white with a bit of grey here and there possibly.

the pic i posted of the silver grey 'thing' is correct, just much lighter than any of my own sg's up till now.

and variety? lol that's just a sampling of what i've actually got. no 2 are alike. there are some browner some blacker colored pullets, and the reds vary a bit in shade, with the big differences in head color. one's head is nearly black, while another's is more brownish.

go back to the post i put up of the panorama pic... that'll give you a little idea of the differences. those are all dorkings, except 1 or 2 easter eggers (dark legs), a couple bantam cochins and one old english rooster.

This is a bummer as I have 2 pens of chicks hatched from egg I got from a person that got their birds from SandHill and mine are turning out a lot like these above. I was wondering what was up with the colors as they are suppose to be reds and coloreds. I think I am going to cull for feet and type with these guys and figure out color later. Several have really good feet and look to be developing good body type. I will have to see what I get in the roosters as to what direction to go with color--lots of work!

have a ? about dorking chicks I received yesterday by mail. one seems to have part a the umbilical cord still attached. I thought it was pasty butt but when using the wet paper towel to remedy the situation, I realized my what it was. the other chicks peck at it when she is with the others. I have made a separate compartment in the brooder for it right now (is this the right thing to do). It is one of the smallest ones and likes to sleep alot but does become alert when aroused. Also when I received the box there was one lying in the bottom shallow breathing. He didn't last long after getting them home
sad.png
but now I have another one that became lethargic, I him into a separate box with light but he is NOT doing well either. The rest seem very lively.........I assume 2 out of 15 is normal??? I apologize for referring to them as "it" I am not sure what they are yet and it is easier for me if they are going to die not be get too attached

. I know these things happen but it is still sad when they are soooo cute.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
