B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

I am looking for a breeder of colored dorkings in or around east tn. I would like to get 10 chicks see what develops. I preferably want to stay away from hatchery. I am looking to start a small flock of them. Please pm me.

We have used the colored dental rubber bands for chicks. They were OK but we had a problem with them slipping off. For teeny tinys, a simple ink dot would be the easist and safest. Once the chicks get bigger we use zip ties or wire ties. You can order them in many different sizes and colors. We never put them on tight, just snug enough so they will not slip over the foot. We also trim the tab so its near impossible for it to tighten further. Also we make sure there is no sharp edge after trimming. As the bird grows we cut them off with pliers, wire cutters or finger nail clippers and replace with a larger size.

I do recall that Yellow House toe punches his chicks.

Here is a quote to ponder:

from this book:

If I am reading this right, white ears go back to the beginning of the Dorking breed as we know it.

That is very interesting.
That tranflation of Columella waf moft likely pvblifhed in the 1700s or before dve to the vfe of the long S wich looks today like an F.

Correct, it was published in 1745... however it was translated by Barnabe Googe in 1577, this was a reprint.

lol don't DO that... makes my head hurt

It's funny, I'm so used to reading 17 & 18th century texts, I didn't even notice this until you pointed it out...

I have spoken with a judge that said: What is positive white? Am I positive that's white? If not, I don't disqualify it.

For me, the top hen is a good example of what a lot of hens look like when laying, although I don't guess that one is laying now

The bottom hen, well, I'm positive that's white

Honestly, the reds seem to have much less white than the SGs. (mine) And I do think you could correlate lobe and tint of egg as well.
