BaaKaaawk's Spring 2020 Coop Build Thread :)

What can you tell us about the floor? Looks like 1/2 inch HWC.

I live in NC so really never gets below the 20's, so a screen bottom here works well. Probably not a good idea for colder Northern climates though.

The bottom is actually 1" square screen. Small enough to keep the critters out, but big enough for the poop to pass through, in most cases.

I have the added benefit of a father-in-law who rakes the coop area daily, so build-up under the coop isn't a problem.

Hope that helps!

Gotcha. Midlands of SC here. 1x2 welded wire under my roost. Started with 1/2x1 but found that was too small. Doesn't all fall through with 1x2, but only have to clean it off every 2-3 weeks. Easy to do and only takes a few minutes.

Awesome! I actually read your post in the other "wire coop bottom" thread about the 1x2 wire but couldn't find any that size. So I went with the 1x1 for now- but built my attachment locations in a manner that I can swap the wire out in the future if needed.

I had 1/2" x 1/2" in my last coop and that was a mess- literally. Almost no poop goes through those holes. Hoping 1x1 and the 18-40" drop from the roosts will get it through these holes lol.

Nothing like thinking about chicken poop size and velocity when creating something... we all get a degree in poopology.

The coop isn't done yet and I've had to chase out chickens, cats and kids. So I guess that is a good sign when everything wants to be in there! Got some of the front siding done. Now I'm down on all the low stuff, should come together pretty quickly! I imagine I'll be done by Saturday.

What a great place to hangout! Your lovely coop keeps looking better and better, looking forward to seeing your finished product!

I'm loving this build!! We are going to be building our coop starting this weekend. Nothing nearly as cute as this though. We are doing a duck/chicken coop split so it will be interesting how we are going to modify. I love that you styled it after your house. Once we move ( in a year max I hope!) I want to build one that looks like a mini barn.

It's a lot of fun and very rewarding building something with your own hands, regardless of how big or small! You'll have to post pictures so we can see your progress!

It really is, I build a LOT. Just built an addition onto our current house last year to make room for my mother in law to move in, built a shed, my soap room and many other things. Construction is nothing new to me. :) Between my husband and myself we can build anything. I will do my best to take pics of the build then post a thread about it once its in the works.
