Sorry for being a negative nancy,

But isn't this illegal? Have you checked with the local fish and wildlife warden? Touching a baby turkey or a duck is illegal, just imagine a baby deer. Just check, we once had a path behind our house that led to a campground. One day a baby deer came running up with a collar on it. The campground owners hit it with a lawnmower and were allowed to keep it because they checked with F&W.

They know whats best for the fawn, I think turning it in would be safer for it and for you.

You can put it back where you found it and see if the mother comes back. The fact that the fawn was in the road calling may mean that something happened to its mother. Does hide their fawns in the brush or such and they stay there unless she doesn't come back for a VERY long time. If you happen to pass by them they just hunker down. If the fawn was wandering around there is a good chance the doe isn't coming back. The one we raised was wandering around calling. A man that lived not far away raised his ten children on deer meat. That is what we and the game warden thought happened to our fawn's mother. If you decide to raise the fawn, dump the replacer and get a lamb nipple from the feed store. One that will fit over a soda bottle. A fawn can't use a calf nipple. My mother raised a fawn on canned milk diluted half and half with water. Fawn did fine. Or you can try this formula that works well for baby goats. Goats and deer are a lot alike. Take a gallon jug of store whole milk. Pour off about a quart into another container. Add a cup of buttermilk and a can of evaporated milk to the jug. Then fill the jug back up with some of the milk you poured off.

Im sorry but I don't think putting it down is the best for the fawn she is healthy and strong. They think putting a fawn down is the best idea because raising her takes too much money, time, and effort they would just rather get rid of it. Im able to find someone with a permit to raise it but I am not turning her into them, to risk it. I think its a little over board that you have to take college classes to get a wildlife permit, maybe a little class to learn how to take care of small animals like birds and things because if it was easier to get a permit with just a class and not so expensive alot less animals would die because of stupidity and people taking them in and not knowing a thing I think I know alot more than the average 16 year old would know about how to feed and care for her, and my neighbor's know ALOT and help me out in the difficult spots and I have BYC and other internet options available. Like the other day we were excercising her around where we found her on a leash so we could see if we saw any does (we found a doe will take in another doe's fawn) and a GROWN woman thought the deer was some sort of Miniature Pincher and after we told her that no it was a fawn like a baby deer she asked if she ate meat?!

It can be illegal depending on your location. You can obtain a permit to posess it to raise though - depending on your area. You can call your local game wardens office and they should have #s of local rehabbers who will take it. You could probably take it back to the location you found it (if there isn't anything wrong with it like injured or starving) and the moma deer will find it too. They will hang around calling for their babies for a long time- even up to a day or so.


I always have to say this LOL - Anytime you find a wild animal -especially a baby- it is best to leave them there. The mothers are there not far away. They often get separated but will find each other. I have this problem with owls being found and people think they are orphaned when in fact baby owls spend most of their young life hopping on the forest floor learning about life. They can't fly very great at this stage either...that makes them appear more 'in need of resucing' to people. This is a hard thing to do (leave a baby where you found it) but it really is the best thing for the animal. Unless it is obvious that it is in distress or injured then best to leave it there. My DH has this saying when it comes to wildlife/woods "Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but tracks". eta: this comment by my Dh isn't valid during deer/turkey season

I took her for a run tonight outside she LOVED it! Her tail was going crazy with the wagging. She outrun my brother and stayed right behind me. We ran around the 5 acres for about 10 minutes little breaks inbetween.
