The noodle in the nest made me burst out laughing! I was wondering what kind of bird that was supposed to be!

A very easy diet for baby birds is soaked hard dog food. I've had excellent luck with this diet for baby birds and it is easy to make, easy to get, easy to feed, and easy to store. Simply take a small handful of hard dog food, put it in a plastic tupperware container, put enough water just to cover the dog food and let soak. I make a new batch every day or every other day depending on how hot it is and how much I need. Keep the food in the fridge and let it warm to room temp before feeding. Since the dog food is soaked in water, it will keep them hydrated and the dog food has plenty of protein in it.

Also, I recommend keeping them on a heat pad set on low instead of a heat lamp because the heat lamp can burn them. I usually keep my babies in a plastic critter keeper with the heat pad underneath and paper towels made into a little nest. Makes for very easy cleanup.

You are lucky you have more than one! Releasing a single hand raised baby into the wild can be difficult, but when you have more than one it is actually quite easy. Just let me know if you want more info on releasing.

Yes, it may be illegal, but I know I would have a difficult time letting a nest be thrown out!

Good luck with them! The tiny babies can be difficult, but it's certainly not impossible.

I think you are doing a great thing!

Good Luck! We had sparrows with eggs fall outside our classroom where I teach. The kids wanted me to help, but they died before the day was out at school. The balancing of diet is hard. It is a wonder mama bird can do it. They eat such a variety of protein!

Bad News.... I went out in the field yesterday to pick up hay before the storm hit and my Daughter-in-law to be was bird sitting for me. When I came in from the barn they were all dead. She was crying. I don't know if she over fed and they aspirated or what happened. I am very sad right now.

Hats off to all the Mama birds!!

What do you think she is posting here for? She came here for help. Not non-help.

agreed, and also it is better to not try and let them die, then to try and maybe they will live? I can't believe it is illegal to do that, that is a ridiculous law and should be changed.

To the OP: Sorry you lost the babies...it's always a hit-or-miss with baby birds. I used to collect the ones that fell out of our tree when I was a child and had about 50% success rate in raising them.

There are a lot of illegal chicken keepers on this board and I highly doubt many care that it's illegal to try and save a baby bird's life. OP came on here for help/research, and she was feeding them what she thought would get them by until she found the right formula from...well... - members here. You may want to check out that other site, strictlylegalbackyardchickens.com.

Awww, I am sorry you lost them. At least you know you tried to help them! I've lost many animals and it is never easy, especially when they are just babies!
