Our baby chick looks to have a scab on the top of the vent area. I don't think it is pasty butt because it looks different. I tried taking pictures but they are kind of blurry.
Has anyone else witnessed this or know what it is?

The chick is not behaving any differently and isn't being picked on that I have witnessed. It can poo just fine too. She is fluttering around eating, drinking, and loving her roomies.

Not sure if i should try and remove the scab (or whatever it is) or leave it be, but I'd feel like a bad chick mommy if I left it alone.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

* This first picture is after we soaked in warn water and cleared a little poo off.
* The second picture is this morning after she dried and got some rest.

While it looks a bit different, I think it is still within the realm of a slowly healing naval/vent.

Just before hatch, the egg yolk draws into the chicks body. Sometimes you can see a bit of scab from that, though usually below the vent. Sometimes, however, I see a bit on the vent too.

It also could have been pecked a bit by another chick.

I would keep it clean, put some antibiotic cream on it, and watch it.

If the chick is eating, pooing, and growing normally, and the vent is healing. No worries.

If however, you begin to notice it is not growing as quickly as the others, then you likely have a bacterial infection inside the gut from a poorly closed naval/vent.

To boost its gut flora, I would give it some yogurt and be sure there is apple cider vinegar in the water (raw with mother, only in plastic water containers to avoid toxic leakage of metal coatings).

Good luck with the little one.

Thank you so much for your help! I hope it is something that is already healing. I still haven't noticed the other chicks pecking but we will see.

What type of antibiotic ointment do you recommend? I only have like neosporin on hand right now.
