I have a chick that has painful poops and cries whenever it tries to go. When it does I can see that the vent is red and appears swollen. The chick hasn't been pasting up. What can I do to help it poop more easily and for the vent to go back to normal?

I now notice the redness I was seeing when it poops is something reddish potruding from the vent and it's where the poo is coming out. It goes back inside after she's done. It is a silkie so I see the contrast of colors against the black skin.

you can try plain yogurt and some people like to use apple cider vinegar in the water. It should clear up after a bit. Keep vent clean also.

Welcome to BYC. Look at your brooder temperature (if you are using a heat lamp) to see if they are overheated, since that can cause dehydration and constipation. Use an inexpensive thermometer in the warmest spot, and make sure there is a cooler spot to escape to if they are too warm. Get some mineral oil and give it a 1/2 tsp in some yogurt and raw egg. You can also place a QTip in the oil and rub it just inside the vent to lube it. Encourage it to drink fluids by dipping it's beak, and give a small amount of plain yogurt for a few days for probiotics.
