My baby chick, 2 days old, was born with a middle toe that was crooked inwards at the middle joint, and when she walked she walked with the outside toe and middle toe together and bearing weight on the outside of the foot.
After she had dried and fluffed up she was feeling pretty lonely so I thought I'd let her see her 4 siblings before I started putting a sandal on to keep her foot and toes in a better position and heal. But when I put her down she started to peep very distressed, tried running but was limping, pecking and biting at her foot, but still having poor balance she fell over everytime she lifted her foot to bite it, which made her even more distressed. I picked her up quickly and put on a sandal, which she was very unhappy about. But I let her spend the night in a different, smaller brooder by herself to avoid any bullying by the other chicks because of her strange shoe.
Next morning I put her in with the others under supervision and she did great. Perhaps a slight limping but hard to tell if it was from pain or because it's hard to walk with the sandal. But not distressed at all, just happy doing whatever everyone else were doing.
Tonight, after about 30 hours with it on, I thought it was time to change it (being a growing chick and all that), and to my surprise the toe was practically straight and no longer walking on the outside of the foot! But she started frantically peeping and biting her foot again, despite it looking good (at least to my untrained eye). Could it be something else other than that toe and the way she was bearing weight that troubles her? Or is it that but that it just hasn't healed completely on the inside yet, and with the sandal on for a few more days she'll be ok? Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of what her foot looked like before, but I'll attach some pictures of what her foot looks like, perhaps you can see something I'm missing (it's the foot on the right, her left foot).
If I should put on a sandal again could I put her in with the others without me watching over all the time? Or could that really harm her?
I hate seeing her in pain, and it pains me not knowing what is wrong.. Any advice or ideas is greatly appreciated.
