Baby chicks countdown thread!

UPDATE: THE BABIES ARE HERE!

Finally, a whole month later, we received our replacement order from Cackle Hatchery! To recap, we ordered 20 chicks total. 15 of their "Assorted Heavy Females" and 5 of their "Rare Chick Special". They sent 21 chicks and 20 of them made it, so I'm calling it a success! USPS even sent them where they were supposed to go this time. :p

It was kind of crazy timing because we had to drive 3 hours away to close on our old house and then drive back and pick up the chicks from my office since my boss had graciously picked them up at the PO for me. But despite feeling bad for my original order of chicks, I think things likely worked out the way they were "supposed to" as the weather was so awful last month that we would have had to keep them inside a lot longer than we would have wanted to. Hopefully, this timing will work out better all-around 🤞

Onto the chicks! :jumpy

🔍 I have identified a few, but I'm a newb so if anyone can help me out, I would be ever so grateful!

Ok, so for the 5 "Rare Chicks" I've figured out a few. Maybe. My favorite little teeny guy (Kinda hoping he's a roo) is a Red Jungle Fowl. There is also what I am fairly confident is a Silver Duckwing Jungle Fowl who I hope is NOT a roo haha. I've named her Rebel because she's already a punk. (Shhh... don't tell me it's probs a roo with that attitude... Let me dream). There is a Black, Blue, or Partridge Cochin. And what is probably a White Cochin but could be a Brahma as they are almost identical as chicks. (My bet is on the Cochin though, because it seems that the other assortment includes more than one of each kind and the Brahma isn't in their rare category.) There is one more silvery-looking one who has me stumped. My 7yo daughter has imprinted on her and named her Snowy. My best guess is a Silver Spangled Hamburg 🤔

As for the 15 "Assorted Heavy Females," (who are all brown egg-layers so that helps narrow it down) I've identified 2 Black Laced Silver Wyandottes for sure. I think 3 or 4 are Barred Rocks and the other 3 or 4 are maybe Cuckoo Marans. I'm going to have to separate them to get a better idea since they are all so active it's hard to keep track of who I've looked at already 😆 I think 2 of them are Lavender Orpingtons. There are also 4 yellow chicks who seem to be impossible to tell apart, but I think at least 2 of them may be Buff Orpingtons? Who knows!

I'm back with more photos! A few, at least :)

Not pictured are 4 yellow chicks - 2 different breeds, I think. Idk what they are though! They all look so similar. I may try and get some better photos and ask on a new thread.
Also not pictured are 4 Barred Rocks. One was recently named Midnight by my 7yo. I'm trying to let them name the rest of the chicks since I have already named quite a few LOL

Anyway, here are some little chickies to hold those of you over who are still waiting.

I named the Wyandotte chicks after a couple of punk ladies because they are a couple of punk ladies. The pure chaos they inspire over a stray piece of grass or ladybug is honestly kind of incredible to witness.
1649726605270.jpg

The Jungle Fowls are super energetic and wild, too. That's how Rebel got her name. I'm still feeling out the little red one before I name him/her.

1649726605269.jpg

We ended up with what I *think* are 3 Cuckoo Marans and 4 Barred Rocks. I didn't get a photo of the BR. I'm letting the kids name them. My 3yo named the White Cochin "Lemon" which is a sort of ironic name for her since she is so sweet. I'm calling her a she. I'm manifesting it. LOL
1649726605268.jpg

I'm feeling pretty confident about Snowy's breed now. My 7yo really hopes Snowy is a hen. I hope so too. Funny story about Eden... My 3yo wanted to name her "Edenk" but by some miracle I convinced her that Eden was a better choice and now she thinks it was her idea. Lilith sounded like a good name for the other one to keep in with the theme.

This sweet fearless baby always runs up to aggressively greet me and has started jumping up at me until I put my hand down so he can hop on and come up for either a snuggle, or to explore and peck at any buttons or stray threads on my clothes. I'm guessing he's a rooster based on his general fearless attitude compared to the others, but honestly who knows! Either way, this one is my best buddy and I love them. After my experience with a couple of Cochin hens a few years ago and these 2 Cochin chicks we ended up with in the assortment, I think I will definitely be adding more to the flock in the future. My goooodness they are the sweetest of the bunch. :love

MY CHICKS ARE HERE!!!!! MY CHICKS ARE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need to get to the feed store to pick them up!!!!!!! but my daughter is at a working job interview so I have to wait to pick her up! OMG I am going crazy waiting and it has been all of 5 min since I got the text that they are here!!!!!!!!!!

Ok tons of chick pics. I got some extras and also picked some up for a couple of other people.

Oh and Lavender Orpington and BCM didn't come in. So got a salmon Faverolles, but I already have one so may sell that one with some of the extras

I need to go buy feed today, and hopefully they won't have any more chicks I'd like to add. If I stay true and don't impulse buy, here's this years additions.

My Golden Comet pullet Blanche.
Blanche.jpg

I picked up the two Salmon Faverolle pullets as well. Paris (Hilton) in the front and Robin (Actress from The Princess Bride) is behind. I got them local and they are 5 weeks in the picture. So far Paris is a mean girl and took a chunk out of Robin's eyelid. You can see that in the picture.
Paris and Robin.jpg

Australorp pullets Meridoc (Merry) and Pippin. I know they are boys in the book, but it just seemed fitting.

Pippin

Americauna (Easter Egger) pullet--Still unnamed. I'm kinda waiting to see how she feathers and what color she'll be.

The straight run Buff Orpington--Bruno...We don't talk about Bruno

so cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been a busy spring and I meant to update already! My 5 chicks arrived and are now 3 weeks, and super healthy and active! THey go out in their chick pack n' play (chicken tent) during the day and get to forage in the dirt a little and hang out in the shade. My 3 older chickens are completely ambivalent to them so far, mostly just checking out the tent and moving on. We'll see as they get bigger and look more like big chickens-my 3 2 year olds have never seen other chickens so they might not know what they are yet(there are lots of wild birds in the back yard)!

I love our new heat plate, I used that with just a regular lamp that I turn on during the day and off at night. I love that they are already used to sleeping in the dark!
We only had one who had a dirty rear end at day two, but I cleaned her up and nothing since. I think she ate a shaving.

Here are photos with names-so far I am thinking they are all females(what I ordered) and I'm hoping for no surprises due to the headache of rehoming-we can have up to 10 hens but no roosters. Here are their 2 1/2 week photos-

Chick #1 - Easter Egger "Kevin" Super curious and always comes to check things out
(she's the biggest chick and feathered out first)
IMG_0935.jpeg

Chick #2 Speckled Sussex "Sody Pop" Super active/spastic, first to jump in my hand
IMG_0936.jpeg

Chick #3 Golden Laced Wyandotte "Cocoa" A bit shy but seems sweet! At 3 1/2 weeks she has some lacing on her feathers now, will get new pics soon
IMG_0937.jpeg

Chick #4 Light Brahma "Vanilla" She is the most shy and a scaredy chicken, but she will reluctantly sit in my hand. She does not come running when I reach in to the brooder, but will take a mealworm treat from my hand.
IMG_0939.jpeg

Chick #5 Buckeye "Marshmallow" She is super sweet and active, and (true to her breed) is the first with Sody Pop to find bugs in their tent(we have a lot of earwigs out here) and gobble them up. We bought her after losing our last beloved Buckeye to illness
IMG_0943.jpeg

Here they are the day we got them:

...and at 2 weeks...

...and in their tent on Tuesday at 3 weeks...(Sody Pop, Marshmallow, Kevin)
IMG_0966.jpeg

I am excited and trying to work out when they will go into the big coop(thinking 7-8 weeks, is super hot here already so cold not a factor)-we are going to separate it with chicken wire at first so the big chickens can see them but not get at them. My thought is just get it normal to have them around but not be able to access them until they are big enough to handle themselves, which we will play by ear.

So cute, i bet they love it outside. I have some 2 week olds brooding in my coop and input them out in a tent sometimes. Then hens (all I've got, just rehomed my last rooster) tent to spend more time in the coop, just sitting quietly near the brooder-not sure if that bodes well for a ceptance or not.
