Baby chicks countdown thread!

Pics
1. Your expected ship/arrival week: April 27th 2022
2. How many weeks are left: 4
3. Where you ordered from: Hoover's Hatchery via a local feed store
4. What was in your order: Starting off with 5! 3 Easter Eggers and 2 Sapphire Gems!

Jumping in feet first. I have most of the brooder equipment and will be setting it all up in the next couple weeks. I have a rough idea for a coupe and run, and will be constructing it over the next 6-8 weeks. If an educated grower were to guess when my chicks would be ready to go outside, I'd like some predictions! I need to find that little spreadsheet I've seen floating around on the net with age/ temp timelines for going outside.

Do they go right from the brooder to the coop?

Thank you all for helping a green horn! I've wanted to do this for years, and I finally have just had enough of thinking about it. Time to get after it, I'm very excited.
They can be in the coop once they are fully feathered. Mine were off the heat at about 4 weeks old and fully feathered around 5 weeks. Expect building the coop and run to take longer than you think. Lol. That is one thing someone told me and I didn't believe it since there were 2 of us working on it, my husband is good with that stuff etc.... Ummm yup it took longer. 😂🤣😂

Mine are in the coop rhey are 3-4 weeks old their brooder wasnt big enough. They do have heating in there right now and they are doing really good. It took us 8 weeks to build our coop.

Will do! It certainly looks like a tedious build...

I am down to about 8 days (hopefully) till I get my babies! My order from the feed store should be there on Fri or Sat (hoping for FRI! last year they were late and didn't come until Sun! LOL). and hoping the chicks come to the other feed store on Thurs or Fri next week (the rare which is what I want came on Fri last week and didn't see that they came today so guessing Fri this week so see what happens next week). They just post on their FB page and you have to see it and go ASAP to get the chicks since they are first come first serve.

Did you place a baby chick order? Are you counting down the days until your new little puffballs arrive? This is the thread to share your impatience, your excitement, and announce the day they get here before starting your own show off your new chicks thread!

If you want to join me, please post:
1. Your expected ship/arrival week
2. How many weeks are left
3. Where you ordered from
4. What was in your order

Let’s be impatient together! :celebrate
Our first delivery to feed store came out great.
1 Isa Brown
4 Sapphire Gems
1 gold comet
2 black Americana’s
We had an order for 6 EE’rs on april 1st, sadly the whole shipment was DOA🥲😞.
We are waiting ( trying to be patient) for another shipment they will hatch April 10th n we should have them by april 13th to be delivered to feed store.
Our first group are doing great n growing fast. I’m concerned of age difference now we will have to put a divider in the brooder so they can see each other for a week or two.
Our first batch came from tractor supply. Our other or that did not make ( poor little chicks) came from Goodmans farm supply in China Grove NC, this is where we are waiting to get the others. Granddaughter that is 13 is having a fit waiting, me too😊.
I’ve sent pic of first batch from when we got them n another pic yesterday, they are growing so fast.

Well, I am sad to report that my chicks did not arrive at the post office until today and the gal at the post office said it was a very quiet box... :hit

Cackle is sending out another order and boy do I hope USPS doesn't mess this up again by sending them across the country in the wrong direction! What an awful way to go, poor babies. Hopefully I have some good news to share later this week!!!

UPDATE: THE BABIES ARE HERE!

Finally, a whole month later, we received our replacement order from Cackle Hatchery! To recap, we ordered 20 chicks total. 15 of their "Assorted Heavy Females" and 5 of their "Rare Chick Special". They sent 21 chicks and 20 of them made it, so I'm calling it a success! USPS even sent them where they were supposed to go this time. :p

It was kind of crazy timing because we had to drive 3 hours away to close on our old house and then drive back and pick up the chicks from my office since my boss had graciously picked them up at the PO for me. But despite feeling bad for my original order of chicks, I think things likely worked out the way they were "supposed to" as the weather was so awful last month that we would have had to keep them inside a lot longer than we would have wanted to. Hopefully, this timing will work out better all-around 🤞

Onto the chicks! :jumpy

🔍 I have identified a few, but I'm a newb so if anyone can help me out, I would be ever so grateful!

Ok, so for the 5 "Rare Chicks" I've figured out a few. Maybe. My favorite little teeny guy (Kinda hoping he's a roo) is a Red Jungle Fowl. There is also what I am fairly confident is a Silver Duckwing Jungle Fowl who I hope is NOT a roo haha. I've named her Rebel because she's already a punk. (Shhh... don't tell me it's probs a roo with that attitude... Let me dream). There is a Black, Blue, or Partridge Cochin. And what is probably a White Cochin but could be a Brahma as they are almost identical as chicks. (My bet is on the Cochin though, because it seems that the other assortment includes more than one of each kind and the Brahma isn't in their rare category.) There is one more silvery-looking one who has me stumped. My 7yo daughter has imprinted on her and named her Snowy. My best guess is a Silver Spangled Hamburg 🤔

As for the 15 "Assorted Heavy Females," (who are all brown egg-layers so that helps narrow it down) I've identified 2 Black Laced Silver Wyandottes for sure. I think 3 or 4 are Barred Rocks and the other 3 or 4 are maybe Cuckoo Marans. I'm going to have to separate them to get a better idea since they are all so active it's hard to keep track of who I've looked at already 😆 I think 2 of them are Lavender Orpingtons. There are also 4 yellow chicks who seem to be impossible to tell apart, but I think at least 2 of them may be Buff Orpingtons? Who knows!

I attached a pic of the whole group, my fav Red Jungle Fowl baby, and the one I think is a White Cochin. I will try to get better photos of the more questionable ones this weekend. This has been a fun mystery to try and solve! all the chickies.jpg All the little babies red jungle fowl.jpg Red Jungle Fowl white cochin or brahma.jpg White Cochin?
