Baby chicks countdown thread!

I'm so sorry for your losses, losing a pet who is like a family member can be hard. :hugs You will always have their memories with you and can look forward to new babies running around!

Y'all. A bear got into the coop and we lost 8 out of 20 of our 8+ week old chicks. 😭😭😭 of course that nasty creature took our favorite buddies. We still have 7 barred rock and/or cuckoo marans, (its hard to tell the difference) a new Hampshire chicken, a white jersey giant, 2 silver laced wyandottes, and a silver duckwing junglefowl left. We think the red junglefowl may have escaped and is in the woods somewhere, but we can't be sure.

2 of the chicks we lost who we really miss were Cochins. They were just the sweetest. I didnt expect to bond so hard with a chicken, but my barred cochin buddy is especially sorely missed. My 7 year old took it pretty hard so she drew lots of pictures to work through it. 💔

So, we have a new order in with Cackle Hatchery and expect them to arrive on June 25th.

We ordered 3 assortments because we had a lot of fun with that last time. (And because they charge a $20 fee for less than 15, I figured we may as well just get 5 more chicks. This is how it starts, isn't it?) We ordered 5 assorted Cochins, 5 blue egg layers, and 5 assorted Polish. I'm looking forward to an easier brooding period since it will be warmer out.
so sorry for your loss. A bear can get through even the most fortified coops.

baby chick order #2
1.Due to ship week of June 20th
2.3weeks left
3.Ordered from McMurrays- its a replacement order for previous dead chicks.
4. 5 lemon cuckoo Niederrheiners-SR and 1 Bielefelder female.

Love the fluff!!

oh, how fun! I’m thinking summer brooding will be easier, less worry about cold stress. Plus I’m brooding in the coop..no more basement dust. what are you getting?
A random group! 2 WTB, 2 WTG, 2 Welsummer, 1 each of Partridge Rock, Columbian Wyandotte, Delaware, Cuckoo Marans, Ancona, Andalusian, Buff Orpington, and Easter Egger.

We brooded last summer and it was great! Used a heat plate in our mudroom off the garage which only got down to about 60 at the lowest. Much less stressful and no freeze worries during shipping!

If the Niedderheiners ever are available sexed I definitely want one! And the Bielefelder were sold out…you picked some great breeds!

I can't believe how fast this girls grow! This baby is 10 days old.
