Baby chicks digging to China

They're just scratching around.

If the light is to keep them warm in the brooder, then yes, leave it on. I used a red heat lamp bulb this year because I read that chicks can't see red light so they think it's dark.

how old are they and is the light a heatlamp or just a regular lightbulb for lighting purposes?

They are almost two weeks old. The temperature here is 65°F outside but warmer inside.

It is a 250w red head lamp About 24" away. The chicks seem to like that position.

hum might still be a bit cold to turn it off yet what is the temp under the lamp?

I'm not sure of the exact temperature, I have to pick up a thermometer. The chicks were not huddling under the light, nor were they staying out of the direct light, so it seems pretty comfortable in there.

All the windows are shut, and they are brand new windows so they don't really leak any air.

Ok this might sound a little crazy but my little 4 week old hen is either convalsing or digging not sure but she shakes when she dose it and is really healthy other wise she has been doing this since I brought her home from my daughters school please help is she just digging or what. oh by the way she is a JG if that helps any.

dose she go onto one side and flap the wing around while rubbing her side on ground then reverses side? if so my chick do that quite often first time scared the poo right out of me then I learned its giving itself a dust bath but mine do in in the shavings too esp when heat lamp was on they would do it in the hot shavings then as they got older one time there water was leaking i guess they must of been warm all 4 of them where doign it in the wet shavings.

I have two of mine in the shavings shaking and digging around right now- making almost a purring sound lol! It's precious. And I love when they all circle around and scratch and peck the same spot to the bottom of the box.
