My experience is--- it was to hot---so I suggested a cooler bulb set-up, because of what I seen. No problem that you seen it different.

LOL, his 40 watt bulb set-up you said it was to hot and chicks should be under it----The first pic from Op where the chicks were getting as far away as they could---for sure not under it----You said that was probably them resting----LOL For sure resting close to the 40 watt set-up---LOL

They are resting in that pic I just moved and they woke up they slept buts toward the light and stretched up had plenty of room to move between the light and cooler parts of the brooder

Sorry to the Original Poster here that your post kinda got bad side tracked------I just felt like your chicks were to hot so as a TIP I was suggesting a smaller wattage bulb set-up. Check your heat with a thermometer to be safe--TIP #2!!.

what kind of bulb would you suggest
I never use more that 100 watts, but thats for a bigger brooder---I manily use 25 to 60, but have used a 75 watt. Look at post 22 in your posting here. He is using a 40 watt---the light might be a hair low(didn't question him on the degree's) but that can be adjusted. You just want a area big enough that the chicks can warm---if only a few chicks----a area about the size of a plate or a little bigger. If your chicks are 2 weeks old lay a thermometer on the floor and raise/lower the light to get that spot about 85 to 90 degree's max. Now in a few days you can raise the light a little to about 80 to 85, etc, etc till you get them weaned off the heat.
I have put chicks out side in my mild winters(teans are kinda rare----20's a few nights, 30's more often) at 1 week old, but what I do is set them up a open end big tote, or a small dog house with a couple lights together---I plug in one of the lights unless its going to be really cold then I plug in 2 of the lights. I adjust the bulb wattage so its warm(the temp they need) in the back end of the tote----I do not want my chicks cold nor hot so I check with a thermometer until I am use to setting it up then I can usually tell what needs to be done without a thermometer. That way they can bed up in the back part and stay warm. I have read so many horror stories about so many chicks dying from those extreme hot bulbs----used so much in a small brooder---the chicks dye a lot of times. They are not needed for a few chicks----if a person had a few hundred chicks in a big room---he might need two of them heat lights. Good Luck!!
