Baby Chicks in the Mail...

I ordered 10 Appenzeller Spitzhaubens from tractor supply. They were shipped and arrived to me in less than 2 days. All 10 were alive and well. I’ve had them for a few days now.?

No. We put the order in through tractorsupply, whom sends it to their matcheries, wich then ship them directly to you, via the mail. As for the month, it was one of the later spring early summer months, the weather was hot, a heat wave all week.

My feed store is just a local one not a national like TSC. They (my local store) will add special order chicks to their orders. All chicks get unboxed, fed, watered, checked over and watched for at least 3 hours before any are released for purchase or pick up. I certainly prefer that method of handling.

I think I preffer direct pickup to.... Though this is the first time i've ever lost my whole brood.

My box arrived from the hatchery today. My excitement quickly turned to tears, 3 babies survived. One sweet chick passed away shortly after placing them in the brooder.

Best I could tell, the nesting material in the box shifted along with the lone heat pack included. The poor little thing got cold.

I understand that people have been mailing chickens forever, but this won’t be something I’d do again. Too nerve wracking, even before the loss.

I am so sorry you lost them. :hugs

Can you give us a bit more info though?
Which hatchery?
How far did they travel?
How many did you order?
Any delays?

My small order was shipped yesterday from Meyer, and were claimed at the post office almost immediately this morning. There were no delays that I can tell from the tracking, the only way it could have been faster is if we would've drove and picked them up (which was considered).

I ordered 2 regular and 2 bantam, and one of the regular chicks passed. I've barely enjoyed my new arrivals, because I've been scrambling to try and find a replacement chick. I'm worried that having 2 littles and one big will become a problem once they start growing.

😢

:hugs While very sad the loss of one chick in an order is not unusual. I hope you can find another. Your 2 bantams will do fine with one big friend and her with them. If you cannot find another the ones you have will do well together.

My five chicks that shipped July 20 from MyPetChicken didn't make it. (We were so so sad 😭). The customer service people at MPC were lovely, and we're going to try again at the end of September in case it was the heat that did it (I'm in Alabama). I suspect they were mishandled by our urban post office, maybe because of budget shortages? My plan is to be much more of a presence on the phone and at the post office in the days leading up to my shipment so that they know that they're coming and can look out for them better.
God, I am so sorry!
