Thank you so much for this! I put a 4" board up on one side and a 6" board on the other side to keep the babies in for now. I went to Tractor Supply last night and got a 4.5' by 4.5' dog cage with a pitched roof that I can put inside the big chicken coop. I will try to get that done today before they all go inside for the night. The rooster is pretty aggressive with me, so I have to wait until I have help to get all of that doneHello and welcome to BYC!Glad you joined.
I don't intentionally isolate my broodies after the chicks hatch. I open the door to their maternity ward and she is free to take her chicks out when she wants. I've never seen any aggression with the other hens or the rooster with the chicks. Just curiosity. Any hen that the mother does not want near her chicks, she will viciously drive off. The rooster has always been excellent with chicks.
I would block off the nest box she is in so any hatched chicks can't fall out. Block it with hardware cloth or something so it still has good ventilation. When the hatch is over, move the little family to a ground nest. The mother should protect the chicks.
As for feed, I would put out only chick starter for the entire flock. Put out a couple of containers of oyster shell for the active layers. And I'd feed this way permanently.
Good luck with your broody and her chicks!
