Baby Deer

Called my local vet and he hasn't returned my call I have seen a baby deer that had broke 2 of its legs and they were trying to help. Left my name and # for the wildlife but its after hours. I put her in one of my stalls in the barn over night she has ome chickens and quail in with her. She is so sweet.

I suspect too that the mother may have been killed by a hunter. Poor thing. I think the mothers usually find their youngins pretty readily when they get seperated.

Because it still has spots, I'de say it's mother was killed some time ago. It's not as big as it should be this time of year....Be warned,if the mother died of rabbies the baby could be infected aswell. I know someone that tried to help a drowning deer that had fawns. The deer had rabbies and the person that tried helping it had to be treated for rabbies. Use caution when dealing with wild animals.

I was thinking she was just a late in the season birth. Did the deer bite or scratch them to have to be treated for rabies? I just picked her up and carried her to the barn. I shouldn't have to worry about rabies should I?

Rabies is transmitted through bodily fluids, blood, saliva, etc. As long as there was no exchange in bodily fluids, such as a bite, I don't think that you have too much to worry about.

Just use caution.
