Baby quail feeding

No no no...don't give babies egg shells. Save those for when they are older and egg laying age.
Ok, I'm still giving them it in a separate bowl though, just in case they want to have a small peck at it. Apparently, they know what they need and will take it themselves.

Baby quail are dumb. They don't know what the should and shouldn't eat and they most likely will eat what ever is offered to them.

What do you think happens to baby birds who eat too much calcium daily?

They won’t over eat it unless it’s mixed in and have no choice

They won’t over eat it given the choice but there’ll be plenty in the chicken starter anyway so don’t worry about adding it until they start laying if you’re worried.
I was just suggesting it because it’s an alternative to oyster and it’s free. They’ll soon be laying so I’d have it available for when it’s needed.

While I am not against the free feeding, in this situation where no research or prep has been done you are just asking for trouble. I really feel it'd be best for the chicks to be fed complete feed.
Being in a rural place in Aus I know how hard it is to find gamebird feed, but several petshops stock the Peckish food and most feed stores will have the 24% chick starter.
