Baby Quail News!

From teeni poofs 3 weeks ago to eating and pooping machines that can kinda fly. XD
That's actually some interesting markings on their wings. I just had blue face chicks a few weeks ago and they were much more even in their wing coloring - they do have markings, but the contrast is not that big. I'm thinking the red breasted mother has something to do with that?

But red breasted is a recessive mutation, so for the chicks to be affected by it, the father would need to have at least one gene for the red breasted mutation.

The mother does have rather large markings which could have affected the eggs. I am not sure on the genetic history of the male though, so he possibly has some red-breasted in him as he was in a cage with other males, some of which were red-breasted. But I looked up red-breasted chicks and my babies didn't have any yellow on them, and had a little crescent of white on their chests, and they were too dark too.

While looking up blue-face chicks they match up perfectly, as for their juvie plumage though... No clue, could just be the genetics being weird. XD

A pic of blue-faced chicks off the web.

My babies, pics taken by me.

And three red-breasted chicks with two silver chicks, a pic from the web.

LMAO!!!! The end... Been there

Who knew that quails could fly! XD It sure made me jump when the little one decided to fly out.

And indeed they are, it is hard to believe that they were once smaller than my thumb with tiny stub wings!

It is amazing how few posts there are on them flying. I had one clear a 6ft fence, then another. It didn't take us long to find her. I guess we just have to remember those old movies of quail hunting when the dog flushes them out and they fly. Albeit short distances.

I lost one of our baby button quail this morning. It escaped from the brooder cage (which has a nice, deep solid base but quite widely spaced bars which it must've squeezed through - it's an indoor guinea pig cage). I could hear it but couldn't find it anywhere on the floor - I looked everywhere. I finally located it on top of our tall clothes airer. This is also a chick who has one leg splayed out to the side. It happened when it was about a week old and no matter what we try and fix it with, within 24 hours it has broken or got out of it's hobbles. It looks after itself just fine and is only marginally easier to catch than it's siblings, it preens and dustbathes too, so it will stay with us with one of it's siblings and live in a small cage indoors. I just think it's so funny that the disabled quail is the one that made the great escape.

It is rare to see places even mentioning their jumping ability, the crazy things have catapults for legs! XD I guess that explains the stocky, tank-like body. If the bird jumps high, they gonna be able to withstand the landings.

As Binki said, it is always the ones you never expect! XD
Now I basically have to play ping-pong with my baby quails when I open the brooder to put food and water in. I have noticed that every time they jump out, they always head in the direction of the adult cage too! They must feel they are too old for the baby tank and want to be in the cage with the big quails. =P
