"Baby"silkie update after vet :(

Thank you all for your support, I do appreciate you taking the time to write me. I'm still in shock that Baby is not here this morning. I have only 1 white silkie left. That does it though. I've had it now, time to save my other birds! Thank you for the home depot info. I will look at their netting and also check on line at different nets I can find. By the way,,,,the vet charged me $335.00 for a dead Baby! I know I had to pay for his time and all but that was hard to fork out as I held the box with Baby's body in it to bring home. Hubby was furious, said I should not have paid that for a $2 bird! But all I saw was a life and I had to at least try the surgery. Hubby thinks I should have never agreed to an expensive surgery on 1 silkie bird, maybe he is right. But you have to realize I was there with my daughter and Baby was her baby as well as mine. How could I just leave knowing she needed this done or at least to try otherwise he said she for sure would not make it. I'm just curious and it won't hurt my feelings if you disagree,,,,am I alone in this thought? Should I have not agreed to do the expensive surgery on my $2 silkie bird who has been a part of our family? Hubby thought it was shockingly dumb! I just want to know what would others have done. Julie

I'm so sorry, I have been praying for Baby since the attack, I quess God needed another pretty Baby in heaven.

No you did what you felt was right, what's the difference spending thousands on a 100.00 dog versus 335.00 on a 2.00 bird, an animal is an animal. This is my Humble opinion

Edited to add: I would have done the same as you.

You have to do what helps you sleep better at night, it is an individual thing.

I have the deer netting doubled up over my run. Never had a problem with hawks....and they are around a lot. I do shut my ladies in at night because a determined raccoon could rip the stuff up.

I would do the same as you...my DH would also feel the same as yours. You become attached to your chickens just like any other animal and of course you want to help them.
Best wishes to you...

Sorry to hear about Baby and I would have tried the same as you a pet is a pet no matter what the price.
I use the netting from Home depot and have for 6 years. It's around $6 a roll and so far it has surived a dive bomb by a hawk. My dad was outside when Zaxby and the girls went crazy running for cover. He said a hawk came down and crashed into the top of my run and flopped around for a good 5 minutes or more trying to untangle itself from the netting. He called me to let me know to check the netting when I got home. It held perfect no tears or rips. I'm thinking later on to double up on mine for extra protection but for now I only have 1 layer across my run since it's so big. But it does work!

Okay, good, at least I'm not completely alone in this decision. I do also have a little bit of bright news for a change. Yesterday evening, I had 2 Buff Silkie's to hatch in my incubator. These birds were on day 24 when they hatched! I had almost thrown them away the night before thinking I had done something wrong in my incubation. Never have I had such a low hatch. I was shocked to hear chirping from my room where the incubator was. Sure enough,,,two baby buffs were completely out their shells, strong and doing their thing. Could it be and I'm going to sound real wack by saying this,,,,but maybe just maybe Baby didn't want her old injured body any longer and decided to come back into a new buff silkie body! LOL Okay I know that's dumb but at least I can hope. God knows how much we loved that bird, truly. Maybe he sent her back in a nice new stronger body. Baby was always small for her breed. Just a thought and I'm so glad I have 2 new baby buffs.

They won't ever get to free range in the future, but they will live safely without fear.
By the way, I lock my birds up at night in their barn so a raccoon or anything can't get to them. Thank you for your support, your kindness means a lot to me. Julie

I agree with you 100%. I too would have done the same thing. A dog is a pet, a cat is a pet, and if they have a right to be pets then so shoud chickens. My mom thinks chickens are just food and arnt pets. If a dog or a cat have the rights to be then chickies have the rights to be pets. They are my babies and I would never let anything hurt them.
I am sorry you lost baby and remember she will always be in your heart.
