"Baby"silkie update after vet :(

This is the netting I use on all my runs. Never had a problem with anything getting in. (Hope it stays that way after I just said this!) My coop doors are open 24/7 so the birds never have to wait on me to get up and let them out.

Well... to me $1200 is a bit much .... WHEN prevention is so much cheaper.

For 20$ you can keep hawks away from your birds..... I am sure the 1200 could be spent better else where not to mention dog... fencing...

Its what I practice.

The old adage: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Is something I learned well.

Well here's some more things the vet told me which also prompted me to go with the surgery. He told me that he had done numerous operations on $5,000 parrots. He also said he once saved a chickens life who had his wing and foot bit off by a dog! The chicken lived on for years hopping around just fine. He said this story made our local news! After him telling me about the chicken survival of no wing/no leg, I was even more sure of the doctor's capability. I wanted my bird to be a great hawk survivor!
Fallenweeble-amen to what you said and you are so right,,,hubby will rethink the situation and know that it was important to me and his daughter too by the way who was in tears on the phone with him begging dad to let Baby have her surgery. I understand us women folk think in a nurturing way and men are totally practical so it's no surprise we disagreed. I was just amazed at his coldness towards the issue knowing how much we loved and paid attention to this silkie bird. The vet so surprised at how she laid on her back for him to look her over. He said he had never seen one this calm. I told him we hold all our birds a lot but Baby was held the most since she was our smallest.
Anyways , you guys are the BEST! I can't believe how many people have responded to my messages. The support on here is unbelievable! I feel like I have a bunch of chicken best friends! Too bad we don't all live on the same street! Can you imagine the chickens sounds we'd hear! Mine alone are noisy with my 5 roo roos. Anyways, I just don't know how to thank you all for your kindness and support. You coached me through the whole tragidy and yall were the ONLY ones who did! Love and hugs to all of you! Baby and I appreciate you! Julie

Zunibee, this is the netting I've been looking for too....a real good price,,,I think I can sew a bunch of them together and make a nice big area for the birds to roam during the day. Thank you! Julie

I'm so sorry that she crossed the bridge.

I too would have done the same! A pet is a pet is a pet...

DH will get over it...it may take a while if he's anything like mine. I wasn't talked to for over a week when I bought a $90 rabbit hutch to keep Tom and Jerry in.

Tom and Jerry, ROFLOL, great names! I'd have paid $90 for it too,,,without batting an eye! I'm such a bad wife! I've been thinking,,,,I guess I'll have to pay back hubby later tonight if you catch my drift....a sure way to calm him down.....oh joy! Julie

I would have done the same thing. It's painful without the emotional support from your spouse though. Maybe he's one of those guys who "lashes out" when he's hurting the most... Give him (and you) time. You did a good thing for your sweetie baby and your daughter.

hi arklady,
i think my post must have been somewhat unclear.

what happened was a neighbor's chicken came over into my yard on thanksgiving and my foster dog got a hold of him. it's true, the neighbors should have put a LOT more thought into keeping their chickens in their yard but they didn't. because it was my dog that hurt the chicken, because they were not home and because the bird was in pain i made the decision to take it to the emergency vet surgery center. after it was all said and done the neighbors allowed us to keep the chicken and so he became ours. since thanksgiving i have build a very nice, secure coop area for chickens (i also got some silkies after all of this happened because i was so charmed by rubio!) so that my dogs and other predators cannot get to them. however, it is entirely possible that another of the neighbor's chickens could come over the wall at any time . . .
also, rubio, the $1200.00 chicken, is going to be a house-chicken most of the time because he only has one good leg.
anywhoo . . . i totally agree with out about the ounce of prevention thing. i try to be super careful with my own fur and feather babies! but when bad things happen i feel it's my responsibility to do my best for the animals that cross my path. i don't have any human children and i'm lucky enough to have the finances to do it so i do. it's just a personal choice ya know?
peace and good chicken energy to all!

I am so very sorry Julie that you lost her, she was a little battler wasn't she, it so hard when we lose our hearts to them and they have to leave us.

So so so sorry.
You must be very upset. You did a good thing.
That was steep for a vet visit. God forbid you ever have another emergancy but if you do maybe he should go to.
Chances are he would have come to the same conclusion.

Hugs
