They're cute, I'm glad you rescued them! I hatched out 4 of them (and two babies of another breed) a few years ago, but I released them.

Those sliders are babies and the legality or illegality depends on your State and sometimes county laws. They are harder to raise than most species and can get large...average is around 8" diameter. I use the shells of them for rattles and bags. I buy them directly from farms in Lousiana.

But who is to say these were farm bred? It is just common sense that you should always wash your hands after handling any animal regardless on whether or not it is vaccinated and in this case possibly having the risk of having salmonella....If it was a fact that these were farm bred, then that is fine, but since they were in a dollar store, you never know. Better to be safe than sorry

I personally have never gone to a pet store in search of turltes as pets, the ones I rescued because they were freezing. I like to observe them in their natural habitats, that is where they belong. Didn't even know they had turtle farms !

I have 2 red earred sliders as pets. I "adopted" them August 07 and they live in a 20 gallon fish tank. They have doubled in size in a year but they still fit in the palm of your hand.

The 12" adults have just as much salmonella as the fresh baby hatchlings.. straight outta the egg.

I would definitely report the store that sold them to you. In Indiana, RES are illegal to keep and sell because they are an indigenous species. Also, to sell any baby turtle under 4" here, you have to have a USDA permit, which I'm guessing the store you got them from does not have.

I have 2 slider and a yellow belly in a 55 gal with a $200 filter on it! They need quite a bit of room!! Just make sure you wash your hands or the kids hands when handling your turtles and you should be fine I never had a problem! No they weren't legal to sell at that size for other then education.

edited to add you should seriously report them that is illegal, and cruel. They will sell more now that you bought them, I know you bought htem to rescue them, but to rescue more PLEASE contact PA game commission and they will deffinatly be able to help. I am so angry to hear that somewhere in PA theres a stupid dollar store that sells pets. No dollar store around here does anything rediculous like that, they sell cheapo glasses, notebooks, clothes, etc. This is just as upsetting as hearing about fleamarkets that sell kittens and puppies, none of ours around here (around my area of PA) do that, they sell trinkets, and other colletables...no animals as it's illegal without permits.
