Backyard Brahmas!!

Pics
This is how I cool off my birds in this heat. They get puddles to cool their feet in and a mister to cool their heads off. When it is very hot I use the sprinkler and let it run on low for them to use to keep cool! They love it!

Hi there everyone. I love my Brahmas and this is the only breed I keep. I have Buff, Dark, Lite, Silver, Gold and Buff Laced. Also some Lavender, black and lavender Columbians. My favorite are the solid lavender, just beautiful.

You have beautiful birds!! I love brahmas and won't have anything else. Where are you located?

I have three buff Brahmas that should start laying any day now. How many eggs a week do you all get from your brahmas?

I also love my Brahmas, but are they typically aggressive to smaller chickens? We had ours in a large flock, so it was hard to tell, but I need to know, because now we live in the city and can only get a few chickens, and the brahma would be with some banties. I just know the ones we had didn't get picked ON, but weren't the main aggressors either. Also, is there any difference in temperament or egg laying ability between the color varieties? I have only had dark and light, and both the dark Brahmas I had were noticeably more aloof than my lovely light Brahma. Was this just chance or are light Brahmas the nicest? What about buff? I have never had any of them, but they are my favorite, looks-wise.

Our Brahmas get along great with everyone. We only have darks, so I can't speak to the other color varieties, but they are so laid back that I wouldn't expect issues with a mixed flock.

I think mine cycle every 26-28 hours or so. A hen may lay early one day, then mid morning the next...it'll get later every day until she skips a day. So probably 5-6 eggs a week.

I think it's more the temperament of individual birds than varieties. I thought all 5 of my dark Brahma hens were being mean to the banties so I started removing them one at a time till I was down to one left in the flock and she doesn't even look at the banties much less chase them. My lights will peck at them if they get too close during feeding but don't chase or attack. Of the 5 bantams, one is dominate over the other 4 and one is very introverted...she snuggles under the big birds at night. Some problems may be caused by having a dominate banty.

As far as egg laying I think that's different for each bird too...I have dark hens that lay nothing but medium eggs but two will lay XL double yolkers. The lights are a little more consistent large egg layers.
Can't tell you about buffs...I've never had one.

I have three buffs and I just introduced two small bantam cockerels. They are all about the same age but it took a good 10 days to take out the separation barrier and get them all ok with each other. The buffs were not happy about them at first. Now a month later they are all in the same tractor together and do ok but when I let them out one of my Buffs is kinda mean. She will chance them occasionally for no reason. The other two buffs will occasionally bump chests with on of the little Roos. No blood so I hope they all work it out. he little Roos know the girls are in charge though. :)

5 -6 eggs a week would be great. A dozen a week is enough for my family. Anything more is icing! Or for friends!

We have what we think might be a Dark Brahma roo, but he looks so much like the Silver Penciled Rocks we have, I can't be sure. Is there some distinction that you could describe for me to be able to tell the difference? Are there other breeds that also could be options that are Dark Brahma look-alikes? We are obviously very new to this so any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.
