Backyard Brahmas!!

So, so hot today (106 degrees). Put up the ez up to try to give them more shade in the middle of the day. Although they are surrounded by trees, in the early afternoon most of their run is sunny. I've tried just about everything to cool them down, nothing seems to be working very well. I'll just keep at it and hope that the heat breaks very, very soon!

Something I do is freeze several 2 liter pop bottles filled with water for the real hot days. I'll put 2 or three out a couple times a day just to give them some relief. I'll put them in corners and near their dusting wholes. they will peck around at it at first but once they learn its cool they will lay by it. It works with mine and they expect it now when it gets hot.

I thoroughly wet down an area of my chickens run. Now everyday I go out and spray it down for a sec and that ground stays cool all day for them. Also if you're around you can must their area and let Evaporative Cooling do the work for you. This is just me but I try not to do anything too artificial as far as cooling goes. What if I'm not around and they are used to having it, then what? As with any animal I'm letting them acclimate to the heat. We're leaving town for a day and a half for our anniversary and I don't want them overly heated due to being used to help dealing with it. This is just my way. Everyone has their own. Whatever floats your boat.

I do water down the run as well. I agree with the letting them acclimate on their own, but they seemed to be suffering so much today! For sure I'm not going to do too much to help them along, I travel too much as well and depend on my house sitter to make sure that they have water and food, but I don't ask her to go above and beyond that too much.

Thanks for your input. So Chewie definitely has to go since I am keeping another Leg-bar cockerel out of my baby chicks. What is a beetle brow? I am assuming its something bad. Sapphire is the lightest of them all as well. She is 594 grams compared to Cutie who is 752 g. So Sapphire needs to go?
The bigger the better, and Brahmas should have a look of being annoyed, like an eagle does, that look of heavy eyebrows. They should have a wide head, body, tail, and be tall.
Ok so I am a little concerned on this one. Being as it is my first hatch, there is one egg in the nest that is partially broken through, you can see the amniotic sack itself, and there is a rip in it, but I see no movement and can't hear anything. Expecting the worst

Hi, congrats on your chicks. What happened with the last one? Did it not make it?

It gets up to about 104º at times here, but I built my chicken runs under trees, so they all go there under the trees when it´s really hot. I join them sometimes, too!

It makes such a difference, tree shade. Right now we´re getting into winter, so the heat of the day isn´t a problem for now. But I do feel for you guys!

Thank you :) everything was free except 2 sheets of plywood and skrews. Father-inlaw is a wood worker and hubby is a mason, both are pack rats when it comes to building materials, and anything with a motor, lol

Number two is doing fine this morning and under mama. Haven't gotten a picture of him yet but here's the first one. Got two more eggs showing signs, so should be a couple more before the nights over.
