backyard chickens in North Vancouver BC

I’m pretty sure you have a Mr. Pets in North Van, they usually have chicken feed/supplies/farm supplies and even if they didn’t have it on the shelf I bet they would be able to order things in for you with advance notice :)

They do... and fairly centrally located. I didn’t know they carried chicken feed! 2 usually shop petsmart for my cats. Good to know though. I don’t know what their prices are like, but Otter usually runs about $15-16 per bag, less when you order full pallets.

Yeah the stores in Chilliwack, Mission and Abbotsford carry chicken and farm supplies, feed and buckets etc. Not sure on the prices or brands but I'm thinking even if the North Van store doesn't stock it on a regular basis they could probably order it in for her.

I don't know North Van very well but they must have a farm/tack store somewhere since there is a fairly large equestrian community over there. Again not sure where but someone should be able to order in chicken feed since they are probably already bringing in horse feed, shavings etc.

There was a fishing and tack store on lower Lonsdale when I was growing up but it closed up over 15 years ago. I don’t think it was ever replaced. The equestrian areas were slowly disappearing when I left, as even the district out towards deep cove becomes more urban. (By-bye CoachHouse, hello hotel :hmm) I don’t know if there are still stables up by the cemetery, because I stopped riding when I was about 13, mostly due to the expense.

Checking in with local Stables might be A good way to go. But if the Mr Pets out in the more agricultural areas carry chicken feed, then the North Van one should surely be able to order it (chain stores do have some benefits!) I prefer the quality of Top Shelf Feeds (less powder) over Otter feeds/lifeline, but I don’t know if that’s available on the mainland. I expect that as Backyard chickens start making a comeback with the recent changes to bylaws in many cities, that feed will soon become more easily available.

That said, @kathariner if you can make it out to the big Otter co-op store by the mill/warehouse (clearly DH is my driver, it’s out past surrey somewhere!) it’s a great store to browse through for all sorts of gardening and farming type goodies... Also, it might be a good idea to start researching/looking for a vet that will handle poultry before you need one. Hopefully you never need it, but the last thing you want to do in an emergency is find yourself calling vet after vet looking for one willing and capable of helping your chicken (not all avian vets will serve chickens) and Chickens are sooooo worth the trouble of dealing with all this! Congratulations on your flock and first egg (don’t worry, they do get bigger :p)
