Bad experience with Ideal

Friday afternoon and still no chicks. I hope someone nice has rescued them somewhere. And I wish I could track them back along the route.

And I am so glad my anesthesiologist doesn't do work like this!

Well, the poor dears finally showed up this morning. I ordered 20 and 4 were dead with others not doing well. I a not sure how many will survive but we are doing all we can to get them hydrated and fed. These are sex links and Australorps. I have lost 2 of my Aussies already and only had 5 of those. The sex links are pretty important to me until I can start raising my own.
I am sure Ideal will credit me back the ones I lost but it sure is sad that they were in transit for 5 days. It looks like they were in TX for 3 of those days.

Sounds like your upset should be with the Postal service. I had eggs a big delayed myself because of the holiday. Didn't think much about shipping at Thanksgiving time, but will from now on. I don't think Ideal is the one that messed up though. Just bad timing with the PO. I am sure they will credit you back if you call them.

Hi Gary!
I have hatched out some chicks from the Araucanas I got from you. They are nice but all roos! LOL Just my luck! Everyone I got from you is doing splendid. Rotten bunch of spoiled birds because DH hand feeds the buggers! Rainbow has some new girls because we put a few EE's in with his bunch but haven't hatched any eggs from that cross yet.
The chicks I got today from Ideal today are still doing well. They eat, sleep and poop! I believe they are just exhausted. I have not lost anymore since they got here and have gotten settled in.
I am just amazed that they survived 5 days in the box and only 4 died.

I have to speak up here. It is the Post Office at fault. Even if there is a tracking I know for a fact it isn't factual. I have more trouble with the United States Post Office than any other means of transport..

These hatcheries put these chicks in their hands and they loose them.

I wouldn't blame Ideal either. It can all be blamed on the Post Office. (as well as the person ordering chicks at this time of year)

Everyone that has had chickens for a while knows they slow down on the egg laying this time of year and the weather is not the best to be having shipped babies. Does anyone expect to get their chicks in the same amount of time and in the same degree of health when ordering during this time of year as compared to ordering in the spring or late summer?

Don't compair this hatchery order in November to any other hatchery ordered in May, they can not be compaired equally.

I am glad those chicks showed up. Sorry you lost 4, but only losing 4 out of 20 is not a bad thing considering how far they were shipped, how long it took to get there and the time of year shipped.

Stuff happens, when I talked to Ideal about my order the girl spent a lot of time with me, even though I probably was asking a lot of stupid questions. They shipped my order on a Wednesday and I got it Thursday. I never order anything perishable around a holiday. And before I ordered my wife talked to the postmaster to make sure they understood to put the chicks in a warm place until picked up, and personally gave them our phone number. When the chicks were picked up the box was opened in front of a postal employee to verify health. And boy were they healthy.

I find ordering from Ideal a lot less frustrating than ordering hatching eggs. I got stung along with a few others on ebay with what probably was supermarket eggs. The seller has vanished and I learned my lesson.

For those who think no one is at the post office on holidays, think again.
I worked for several post offices and had to be there on Sundays and holidays to receive mail and to also deliver the overnight packages to the addressee by noon. I was the only one there and spent half my time delivering the overnights to very rural addresses so I wasn't always in the building. These were small rinky-dink post offices, not the large processing centers.
I know that when we got a box of chicks in we called that person ASAP but unless they paid for overnight they had to come pick up the chicks. I would tell them the time I'd be in the building.

However, that said, I agree that the post office could have been at fault.
