Three nights ago an opossum got into our coop and mauled one of our hens (3 year old Easter Egger) before we could respond. The wound above her tail is quite bad and there is some exposed bone. We doing the best we can for her without taking her to a vet, which is financially beyond the level of care we can provide to our chickens. We're keeping her in a bin in our house with food and water, which she is taking pretty well. We're spraying the wound with Vetericyn. She is alert and eating and we've heard they can recover from pretty terrible injuries, but we don't want to make her linger and suffer unnecessarily with damage she can't recover from. Any ideas on a prognosis or anything else we should do to help her?

I would get some Betadine or Hibiclens chlorhexidene at Walmart and clean her wounds twice a day with half strength. Then apply plain Neosporin triple antibiotic ointment twice a day. Is she drinking fluids and eating? Can she stand and walk? Is she still in shock?
