a few of my younger chooks have really bad smelling heads, and occasionally have discharge running from their noses.

any one know what could be wrong?

It sounds like your chickens have Coryza. I dealt with that last summer and according to the poultry specialist, it is the only chicken illness that has a smell that goes with it. You are in for a long haul if this is the case.

I could sit here and type loads of info. for you, but it might be easier if you just look at my thread I had going from last summer. It lists all of the steps that you will need to take to get your flock healthy again. If you have anymore questions that you feel are not answered in that thread, please feel free to PM me. My heart goes out to you and your flock.

Can I just chip in with mycoplasma gallisepticum too? Smelly face, snotty nostrils, bubbly eyes? - if so, could be MG (commonly called Chronic Respiratory Disease, or CRD).

A dose of Tylan Soluble or Injectible should clear it up no problem if it is. Our BO was very sorry for herself when she got MG, but within five days on antibiotics was completely recovered. It's a less troublesome and serious prospect than coryza - so I hope it's what you're girl has got.

Good luck!

Aha, if they have had mycoplasma before, they'll always be carriers and it may continue to return sporadically, especially during times of stress such as introducing new birds, changing feed, environmental stresses such as bad weather, the moult, travelling, etc etc.

We're always keeping an eye on Henrietta now that she's carrying, and have Tylan on hand just in case.

It isn't usually terribly serious though, so treat with the Tylan (we had a hell of a time making poorly Hen drink the medicated water when she was feeling under the weather, so we simply dunked her head under a couple of times a day!) and they should recover in about a week.

All the best of luck xxx

I know this is an old tread but boy am I happy to see positivity. My 3 week old baby started smelling bad, today I noticed bubbles in her eye. I ran to the feed store to get antibiotics. I'm hoping its a respritory infection and not something that will make me kill off the flock. She is my daughters favorite. I just went to heck on her and the bubbly eye was glued shut. Her nose looks fine... I'm so scared of something worst.

Hello, I know this is old, but I believe we are battling the same thing in our flock. I click your link but I could not find the treatment course that was recommended. Any help would be really greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
