Hi everyone,I just got a racoon trap to trap a racoon that has killed 6 chickens over the fall last year and spring this year.Im 13 and obvously dont have a gun so dont go saying I should shoot it nor is my mom going out to get a license and buy some .22 .Anyway after I catch the thing Ill put the trap in a big trashbarrel full of water after that ill be carefull and bury it.Ive read soooo many argumments about relocating and dont want to go to that trouble.SO what baits should I use to catch it?

We use a small can of cat food and marshmallows to catch raccoons and possums. We use eggs to catch skunks, but sometimes catch a raccoon with eggs, too.

My son is 15 and he uses sardines...they work really well...the coons can smell them a mile away! He has also used eggs - no matter what you use. Put the bait waaaaayyyy in the back of the trap. If you can, wire the sardines in and don't open the top of the can all the way. It's a peel open type can. Make the coon work for the bait. It increases your chance of him tripping the trap. Good Luck...keep us posted.

I've used sardines or smelly canned cat food. I have to put the can in a slightly larger container and pour water to make a moat around it. Otherwise the fire ants swarm over the bait.

After you catch your critter be sure to secure the trap door with zip ties and/or twists of wire before you try to pick it up. That way you can be sure it won't squeeze out while you're handling & moving the trap. Be careful not to get your fingers near the mesh where the critter can reach you.

Happy hunting. And thank you for not attempting to relocate your catch.

Those are all great baits to use for tra;ping raccoons.
And no matter what anyone says, in most states it is illegal to transport trapped animals. The main reason is the spread of disease.
