baits to use to trap coons

As jojo said, you have to get the bait way back in...I sometimes scatter breadcrumbs all around and lead into the trap. I also put some under the trap so once they are inside, they have to dig and work at it. We used cat food and bread last time, but just about anything mentioned will work. The real trick is getting to coon into the trap and keeping him there long enough to trip it while he is inside.

Heck, I've caught them with dry dog food (Pedigree Puppy Dry to be exact) they seem to like the puppy food and it is probably what they are here for anyway don't seem interested in the chickens when they can find a little Pedigree on the ground.

A lot of good advice. If you have problems catching cats, use the sweet baits: Marshmallows, jelly, honey, etc...

Coons like the sweet baits. Marshmallows are good. Danish are good. Cats do not like sweets.

everytime I used sardines in my trap I always caught box turtles.
Most people don't realize turtles love sardines!

Coons like, Jelly, marshmallows, and fruit flavored yogurt.

Coons like to crawl all over your trap and many times this will throw it and you will miss your catch.
To prevent this stake your live trap down so that it doesn't rock or shake around.

I also like to keep some old eggs around. rotten eggs are candy to opossums. Don't ever thow your bad eggs out into your fields or woods etc. always save them for your traps. Throwing the eggs out only draws more varmints to your area as they smell the bad eggs.

Thank you for choosing not to relocate. Once a raccoon has been trapped it is very hard to get them to go back into another live trap again!

Besides all the good advice so far, I would add smoked fish as a bait. But it also depends on what they are eating if they are taking eggs use eggs and possibly another item. If they have access to a dog or cat food dish around the neighborhood, dog or cat food maybe a good bait to start with.

Ok heres iwhat I will do.Ill put the trap near this brook in my woods(I usially see animal tracks there)and ill bait the trap with grape jelly on bread and some honey then ill put it wayyyyyy back it the trap and also ill partially open a can of tuna and wire it down.How does that sound?

I also use old feed sacks or an old tarp to cover the top and sides of the trap, just leaving the door uncovered. That keeps them from messing with the trap and setting it off before they go inside.

Good Plan...don't forget to somehow anchor the trap. They can roll the cage. By rolling the cage it can cause the door to reopen. I think you have everything in order now. Good luck keep us all posted.
