Bald eagles

We have many bald eagles where I am and they are no laughing matter. Messing with one will bring you great federal and state misfortune. As I stated in another thread, bald eagles can do anything they want and they always in win in court. Several people in this area have found this out to their misfortune at one time or another.

We have three families of bald eagles living near us, we live just off the water. So far we haven't had any problem with other birds or anything else, just our dumb chicken killing dog. But I have watched them run for cover when the sound of a hawk pierces the air. None have landed, but probably because we have a great dane/pit cross, an American Bulldog/pit cross and a dachshund almost always in the yard 'patrolling.' You see them circle a few times before they fly off.

So far (touch wood) I haven't had any problems with the resident Bald Eagles. They seem to prefer fish and seem to have plenty to eat.

They can and do kill poultry as large as geese if they are hungry.

I have a very secure covered night run, and if the eagles show any interest in my birds, my birds will get permanently confined to their safe run. If I can't allow my birds out into their large fenced area, I will expand the covered run to give them more space.

My choice to have poultry. My responsibility to keep my poultry safe. If fences or covered runs are what it takes to keep my birds safe, then I build fences and covered runs.

I keep my chickens in a covered run. We have plenty of bald eagles and hawks here. I've watched the eagles hunt ducks on the big pond that touches our property. The girls only get supervised free range by me or the dogs. They are good paranoid birds that don't venture far from shelter.
