A few years ago we had a chicken for a summer until he disappeared and then later had two guineas that we had to put in the freezer since having fowl was against codes in our city. The guineas were great until we had to keep getting them from the back door of the diner across the street. Then I brought home a box of chickens from tractor supply and got a nice talking to about breaking the law so I gave the chicks away.
We moved to the country last year and now we can have chickens!
We settled on six breeds with a minimum of three each from cackle and received 21 hens (in theory) and eight instead of five guineas. Down to 7 guineas and still have 21 hens. They were mailed out Monday and we received them Tuesday afternoon. Our neighbors said they look very hardy and healthy.
Breeds: We have 4 Easter Eggers, 4 Delawares, 3 Dominiques, 3 Jubilee Orpington, 3 Welsumers, 4 Black Laced Silver Wyandottes, 3 Jubilee Orpington and 7 purple guineas.
Favorite part of raising chicks is how cute they are and they learn to follow us around. It‘s fun to see them running around the yard cleaning up and my favorite is when they run to my husband when he gets home from work. Looking forward to having eggs and having the chicks do yard work with me. Not looking forward to learning to butcher but I’ll tough up and learn and am already learning I might as well order meat chicks next time I get layers. Currently finishing up their coops with my husband and then we have to figure out how to let them free range safely and protect them from the foxes and other critters.
Hobbies: Self employed as balloon decorator (upstateballooncompany.com) and Airbnb host. Working on getting a real estate license, learning to play piano, teach bible studies and fill in minister for a local church, started hobby farming with blueberry bushes last year, chickens this year and hoping to get a greenhouse next year. Also enjoy photography, kayaking and often do house painting for friends and family. There’s always something fun to do and no room for tv.
About me: Recent empty nester helping our children getting settled into their own places. We have a 5yo mutt, a blue and gold parrot in her 20s and a squeaky cockatiel. I’ve been a city girl with a country heart for a long time and now we finally have a place in the country.
I’ve been bumping into byc whenever I search a question and decided to join. Not sure how everything works yet but figured I’ll learn plenty and eventually be able to help others too. Part of learning chicken speak is probably well known resources that I have no idea about yet also.
