Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

So glad to hear you got a place where you can raise what you want without rules and laws getting in the way.

Kudos to you for wanting to raise meat birds. I'd have to get a farmer around here to do the culling if we did that. We tried once. It didn't happen.🫣

We're glad you're here!

Thank you! I haven’t read a paper book in a few years but I’m gobbling (he he he) them up now! Bought Storey’s and can’t get through it fast enough.

I took my two guineas to a farmer too because I just couldn’t do it. He showed me a little years ago so I know a couple things and that was my bedtime reading the night before the chickens came. I have helped skin a sheep and a pig so I know once I get over my squeamishness I’m ok and I have to get over it every time! Not squeamish about squirrel hunting and won’t hesitate to shoot anything that tries to have chicken dinner on my dime.

:welcome You can find your state/country thread here! If you want to learn more about navigating the website you can check it out here. God bless and have a great day! :)
Thank you! Posted there too. We are in Saratoga county NY. Loving living in a “right to farm” county. Everyone who buys a house signs a statement saying they understand at anytime they can be living next to a farmer and having farm activities.

FYI with a word of warning ...
Chickeneering is not a hobby ... it's a DISEASE ...
but ... Welcome to one of the most entertaining, rewarding, fascinating and often frustrating hospital wards you'll ever experience!
We're glad you're here!
Love it! Yea - I was hooked the first time I saw chickens in tractor supply. Been wanting to do this for years. I was gonna wait until this spring until I saw that I could pick the date for when the chicks would come in the mail. They will be adults in December so I’ll have laying hens in the spring rather than waiting all summer. Now how to keep them safe through the winter. Open to suggestions. Jan will have us down to 5 degrees for a few days.

Hello! Welcome to BYC! One thing to remember when building a coop is 1/2 inch hardware cloth is you friend and your chickens protection! Use it on every opening on the coop and the run! You will be glad you did. Also run a 2 foot wide pc. All around the perimeter of the coop and run. Use metal staples to hold it in place on the ground ( cheap on Temu). Utilize plenty of ventilation well above their heads so it is not drafty on them. 😊
