Sillystunt, what's in the chicken food that's bad for the goats, do you remember the post you read? I've never heard that, but sure don't want my goats to have problems.

youdon'tknow32, I used to feed Sweet Feed, but it really isn't worth the money, and does tend to make them fat. I give free choice grass hay, occasional alfalfa cubes (mine don't like alfalfa hay!) about 1 cup cracked corn or oats for each, and they have a mineral block. Mine also eat the weeds and any tree limbs they can reach. You'll love your little one, they have so much personality!

Grain in general is bad for male goats as long as they have enough other food sources.
It can lead to Urinary Calculi, which blocks the urethra, and can KILL them
It can be prevented by feeding them Ammonium Chloride, but it's easier just to NOT feed them unneeded grain.

2 cents:

Chicken feed to goats - the reasons you don't want them to get into it are:

1) incorrect calcium to phosphorus ratio will cause UC, even in does
2) improper selenium/copper/zinc levels will cause deficiency
3) high corn content will lead to all the problems associated with corn fed to goats like acidosis, bloat, hypocalcaemia, etc

Those are the biggies.

Sweet feed can lead to UC in a heartbeat in bucks and wethers unless it is offset by high levels of ammonium chloride. It also usually contains a good deal of corn (see #3 above).

Just go with a good quality goat pellet and hay, and you'll be fine.

PS - keep your horse out of the goat feed! If it is medicated, it is deadly to equines.
