Racing homing pigeons bands begin with the letters of the issuing organization followed by the year of hatch/banding, then the letters of the racing club and finally the individual number of the bird.

Totally depends on the type of band, which depends on what the pigeon is used for and the organization it was registered to. I think for most, there are two conventions, the association and the club, and then there is the identification number unique to that pigeon. Race bands first have the organization letter designation/convention, such as AU (american racing pigeon union), IF (International Federation), NPA (national pigeon association), and there are also other ones such as IPA (independent pigeon breeder) and such. Whatever the letter designation, you can likely look up what it is online. Next, for race bands, there is another letter designation/convention indicating the actual club. Last, is the number, which is unique to the pigeon. So, for example, if you see a band AU 76324 FOYS, that means it's pigeon number 76324 from the club FOYS (really that's a store, but they have their own band groups), and part of / registered to the american racing pigeon union.

The color on race bands changes by year, but it's not always exactly that simple. For example, this year's 2018 AU race bands are green, yet I have some from Jedds that are 2018 bands and are gold/orange-ish in color, which I think most racers find to be strange that Jedds decided to produce 2018 bands in a color different than the rest of the AU bands, but I am just mentioning the fact that this happened to illustrate that the annual color designation is not always consistent.
