Banning pit bulls in Ohio

I don't know if I've posted this or not yet but here it is. It is adapted by a poem written by a cleric in germany during WWII.

SURELY THESE DOGS DESERVE DEATH!

When they came for the pit bulls,
I remained silent;
Surely these dogs deserved death!

When they banned the rottweilers,
I remained silent;
Who needs these dogs?

When they came for the guardian breeds,
I did not speak out;
My dog was not one of these.

When they came for the large dogs,
I remained silent;
My dog was small.

When they came for all dogs,
there was no one left to fight with me.

Matrix adapted from Niemöller -

Here's the origiginal though there are a few variations on it.

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

This variation is inscribed at the Holocaust Museum in New England.

They came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Sounds a little like paranoia to me.

Are you guys seriously comparing the "pit bull" law to Nazi Germany??

First let me say I love pit bulls - we've owned many over the years...

But - no one can deny that these are the dogs of choice for the most unsavory, violent, and stupid animal owners in the country. AND - no one can deny that pit bulls have killed or maimed their fair share of people and children.

Liek I said - we have the pit law here in Denver and no one from the government ever went and wire tapped a home for it.

So while having a problem with pit bull laws and having a problem with wire tapping are legitimate issues- they are NOT interchangable. Nor is this law comparable to Hitler gassing jews, not even close. Should we ban traffic signals because it infringes on our right to travel? Should we complain about maximum occupancy laws because we want to throw a rager?

If you can't stop the people from using these dogs as weapons then you must stop the dog.

If I were a pit bull owner I'd start a campaign to expose stupid pet owners, not gripe about the people trying to protect their children from the stupid pet owners' dangerous dogs.

Valid points DuckyBoys. I originally asked for the poem so that I could use it elsewhere. I did not know if you were directing the paranoia comment to me or the person who posted the poem. Do I think laws are necessary? Yes. Am I distrustful of the government? To a degree. We just need to be watchful. I can totally understand people wanting to protect their children. I will protect mine at all cost. Usually stupid pet owners who have dangerous dogs have other things going on as well that we need to be protected from. We should go after the owners, not the dogs. If people lose their pits they will find other breeds. In many areas where pits are banned, people have taken to keeping presa canarios (most famous for killing the woman in an apartment building in San Francisco.) and other dogs that fly under the radar until they cause a big scene. The bottom line is that there will always be dangerous dogs around, it's the owners who we need to worry about.

The quote is meant to make you think. When you ban one breed what's to stop you from banning another. If we don't stand up for pitbulls whats to stop the banning of other large breeds with bad reps (Rotts, Mastiffs, Dobes, Etc).
