Hi I've done some reseach and found my banny chicken has mg ms. I first of all was wanting to know if bactracillin g benzathine would work on this kind of infection. I need to know how many cc's to give her and how offen. I gave her 4cc's yesterday do to she could not breath and she is doing better in that way today. I would really appreciate the feedback back. Thanks. Lori

Welcome to BYC! Can you post a picture of what you gave? If she has mycoplasma you might want to try Tylan 50 instead because penicillins don't treat it, or that's what this table implies.

Hi @Featherleg :welcome

How old is your chicken?
What symptoms is she exhibiting?
Photos would be helpful is you have any.

I agree with @casportpony If she is exhibiting symptoms of MG (Mycoplasma gallisepticum) - coughing, sneezing, mucous from the nostrils, facial swelling, bubbly/foamy eyes, then treating with an antibiotic like Tylan50 would be best. You can find Tylan50 at most feed stores like Tractor Supply. It can be given orally 2x per day for 5days. Dosage is .20ml per pound of weight. You will want to only treat chickens that are showing signs of illness. Antibiotics will only treat secondary bacterial infections.

If you are dealing with MG, your chicken will be a carrier of the illness all her life even if she recovers and shows no further symptoms. There are several respiratory illnesses that can look similar, so without testing there is no way to know for sure exactly what you have. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044

She is 3 to 4 months old and weighs 1/2lb how much cc's of tylan50 do I give her for mg ms and how offen

Poor little thing, she doesn't feel well at all.
For 1/2lb you would give .10ml or cc 2times a day for 5days. I would recommend that you give the Tylan50 orally.

Watch to see that she staying hydrated, warm and encourage her to eat her her food. It would be best to give her a feed like chick starter or flock raiser. If she is not interested in her food, then try wetting it or offer a little chopped egg.

I see that she has some facial swelling. If she has a discharge or pus in the eyes, try to keep that cleared away by flushing with saline or sterile water. If the eyes are goopy you can use an ophthalmic ointment like Terramycin or Vetericyn eye gel.

I would give her 0.2 ml twice a day orally for 5 days, since it can be hard on tissue at the injection site. Or you could start with 0.1 ml, but she could tolerate 0.2 ml. The recommended maximum dosage of tylan 50 is 0.2 - 0.8 ml per pound (10-40 mg per Kg) 2-3 times a day for 5 days, according to Plumbs.

Edited to say sorry that I posted at the same time as Casportpony and Wyorp Rock--they are quite knowledgable, so I will stay out of it.

I know there is a wide range of doses, and I thought I would let you know how I came up with the 0.25 ml twice a day. The instructions for the Tylan soluble powder say that chickens get 50 mg per pound per day and that turkeys get 60 mg per pound per day.

0.5 pounds x 50 mg per day / 50 mg/ml = 0.5 ml per day, so 0.5 ml divided by the number of times per day.

I joined Facebook the other day , and there is a vet that posts there. She said something like "most people way under dose Tylan and that it really should be given 3-4 times a day".

Anyway, thought you all should know that. :D I hope you know that I mean no disrespect to either of you and your recommendations. :bow
