Does anyone here breed them? I want to know if they would be hard to obtain and I want to know some things about them. Like, what are their personalities like? And what % of the chicks die in the shell?

Hi Kurt,

I know there are people here who breed bantam Araucanas. Myself I only breed large fowl.

Bantam Araucanas can be a bit difficult and expensive to get ahold of, especially if you are looking for recognized color varieties, but they are easier to get ahold of than most varieties of Large Fowl Araucana, in my opinion.

Regarding chick mortality due to the tufted gene, it depends on whether you're mating clean-faced to clean-faced, clean-faced to tufted, or tufted to tufted.

Clean-faced X clean-faced = 0% tufted, 100% clean-faced, 0% dead
Clean-faced X tufted = 50% tufted, 50% clean-faced, 0% dead (in theory -- though this is not really true, as there is some mortality for tufted chicks that only received 1 copy of the tufted gene)
Tufted X tufted = 50% tufted, 25% clean-faced, 25% dead

Though again, it's all a roll of the dice, and your results will vary widely from hatch to hatch.

Now, who here breeds bantam Araucanas? Come out, come out, wherever you are!

Thank you Anne for the info. I am trying to research every breed I want as much as possible so next year when (hopefully) my parents let me get another breed, I will know which one I want. It will definatley be a bantam.

Hi Kurt,

I am working on Blue, Back and Splash Bantam Araucana. I am currently building my small flock right now and I do not anticipate having any eggs for sale for a while. I got my first birds from Bobbi Porto. She was very nice and helpful but like Anne said it was quite expensive, 6 chicks plus shipping was over $100.00. If I were you I would visit the Araucana Club site and think about becoming a member. We have a great forum where you could meet other breeders (perhaps in your area) and obtain some eggs, chicks or started birds so that you can begin. They are awesome , I think you will really enjoy working with them.

Good Luck

i just got some standard fowl eggs but if you visit the araucana website
there is a list of breeders that might be helpful. i got mine free, but i got lucky thank god!

I raise them. I bought mine from JM Happycowboy who had bought them from Bobbi Porto. I paid $30 a bird and they are 2 years old. So far I've set like.... 15 eggs and have only gotten 3 chicks out of them in the 2-3 months I've had them. I think maybe one of the clean faced hens is sterile and one of the others is actually tufted with tiny tufts since i've had plenty of eggs grow up to day 18 and then just quit.

My birds are one gold duckwing rooster (tufted), 1 calico splashed rooster (tufted), blue calico splash cockerel (clean faced), 1 red pyle hen (clean), 1 blue hen (clean), one white hen (clean). I hatched out a duckwing chick (clean), white (tufted) and a clean faced blue. All my birds are rumpless.

Ouch thats rough. I will keep looking for a breeder. I probably wouldn't be breeding them as much as my Sumatras but I might occasionally set some eggs. I just want a pair, is that hard to find?

Well thats better than a pair of call ducks. I was willing to fork over $100 for 2 birds in some instances. Thankfully I didn't and now I have a digital camera.
