My black cochin has grown much bigger and now he's shiny dark green (like a cayuga duck). Is he still considered black? Is that what they are supposed to look like???

Yes! That's called Beetle Green and you WANT that in all black birds! That can idicate good health, and they show better with a beetle green color. Don't feed too much corn and keep stress levels low, these can turn that gorgeous green to an icky purple! High fat diets and good genes will give you green birds.

From pictures, he won't show well. Too rangy looking, again from picture not good enough cushion and not enough leg feathering for a bantam.

Look at some show winners at Nationals and you'll understand what I'm talking about.

The "beetle green" sheen is evidence of proper feather structure, as I understand it. I've been told that the green sheen is highly desireable in black birds. Purple/blue sheens is a sign of bad feathering, and NOT desireable by any means.
