bantam cochins

As long as they are sheltered form the rain/snow and wind, and you can keep their water from freezing, they do excellent. They are so much fun! Even the little roos are hilarious. One of mine sounds like he's crowing into a tin can in the a.m.

We get very cold here in Indiana, I've raised cochins for several years now and never had one problem in the winter. Extremely heavily feathered hardy birds. Make sure they have a draft free building of some sort. I will worn you male cochin combs can get frost bite in the bitter cold, I always use vaseline on them to protect them, it's always worked well. Let me go on to say, cochins are VERY addicting, they're like potato chips, you can't have just one....lol

I just coat the comb thick with it. The vasiline provides a barrier and insulates the comb from the cold. Some of my cochin males have larger combs so when the roost at night and tuck the head under the wing the comb is still exposed to the cold, I learned the hard way and had a few with frost bite, not a pretty sight to see, and I'm sure it's painful to them. So far, I've had good luck with it, no nipped combs since.

When it starts hitting single digits I get worried. Many times in January we are below zero, I always keep an eye on the weather in the winter since I'm out in it twice a day....LOL. It seems to hit the worst when it's consistant days of really cold. My coop is insulated and it still nipped those boys a few years back. I buy just an off brand so it's not a cost issue to use it often as I need, it still works just the same:eek:)

I will definately give this a try. My coop is not well insulated but I am in Alabama so it does not get really cold here. Coldest in 17 years is 7 degrees. Thanks for the tip!
