I went through that with my black east indies, and ended up doing trio's, of the two years experimenting with them and ratio's, I found better fertility also, but that is my own personal experience, but if you end up with some extra, let me know, I want to mix my blood line.

Mrs. Turbo, just went out to my holderread butterscotch the ones I got for Christmas, and I now have 5 eggs, I have brought them in with expected 10-18 degree cold this weekend, even though I have a heat light installed in mr. and mrs. buttersworth pen, LOL, I just wanted to check the fertility, whhheeeeeeeee, I might be a mommy, oh I hope so, my darn white lee moreys call hen came off set, with all that is going on with daddy, I don't know when, so I have just went and took her 4 eggs, going to candle them, and see what stage or if there any good still, but Mrs. Turbo, it's just so exciting, I want to be a call duck mommmy so bad, and raise my own little babies, or them hatch them for me and raise them, I stink like all get out trying to hatch them in incubators, have hatched 3 out of I would guess 150 eggs, using hovabator genisis top line incubators, that stinks!!! They develop all the way to the end and just don't come out the shells.

Awe Linda, sorry to hear about your Daddy. I am sure that is so stressful for you and the family and then to try to keep up with your Calls laying eggs...well, at least that is a bright spot to your day. Wow, your crazy weather! I always try not to complain....we think 32 is cold and we never get snow and hardly ever, ever lose power. Well, hang in there spring will be here before you know it. I am new to Call Ducks, just got two pair a couple of weeks ago and I am in love

Thanks for the information, Linda. It looks like I'll definitely be able to drop one of my drakes, and may be able to drop a second one, depending on whether I want a 1:1.75 or 1:2.33 ratio. The drake I will definitely be dropping has a bit of a purple gleam to his feathers and his bill isn't dark enough for my liking. I've wanted to cull him out of the program regardless. The second drake looks nice, but considering how much of a hassle it is to find BEIs to replace a drake, I don't know if it would be a great idea to get rid of him -quite- yet.

Would you be up for an egg swap later this year when they start laying reliably?

Omniskies I most certainly would, but I will have to say in my opinion, it is hard to find good East Indies in my area, but now I have found some in Fla. a 6-8 hour drive from me she want ship and she has 4 hens for sale, she keeps loosing drakes to preditors, that is the first that close I have found besides like Holderread in Oregon etc. maybe someone will jump in with us and we get a great flock going.

I think it's difficult to find good BEIs anywhere. I have been very lucky in what I have found (everything I have is at around 1.75-2lbs at the last weigh-in), but I'm sure that if I took them to a show I still wouldn't place well. Provided that I went to a show that actually had any BEIs for competition in the first place. Or any waterfowl, for that matter. I haven't shown in this area yet since I would be showing against myself and possibly the random person who is entering their favorite pet. Poultry get a lot of attention around here, but waterfowl simply don't. I plan on making it up to the state fair this year to see how it is up there. My problem is that I raise rabbits and the poultry show has to be the day after the rabbit show. Spending four days out of town with rabbits, geese, and ducks doesn't sound like a thrilling vacation

I haven't ordered from Holderread yet, but I've been tempted. This is the first year I really plan on offering hatching eggs from my BEIs and if it goes well enough I may be really frivolous and order his adults this fall (but if I do that I have to get more of his Mini Pilgrims and not look at the total).

The girls tentatively started laying a couple of days ago, but right now they are laying pullet eggs. I'm waiting for them to clear those out of their system before I do any hatches and test fertility.

I have a order in for Feb=March delivery of Holderread Blue East Indie, and 2 more pair of blacks, can't wait for them to get here, LOL

I have asked the question about frosting on a gray call and if it was a good trait to help breed good female gray color. I think I used the wrong term. Look at the white near his rear end where the gray ends. It is almost a inch area of pure white going down the lenth of his lower section. His bib is free of frosting a good bib. This male had the best female color as a young drake I was hoping it would be a pullet but when I started seeing a green bill coming on I was in for another drake. I still like this male and his two brothers. What do you call it when they have a lot of white in this tail section? bob
