Bantam roo with swollen eye - UPDATE

I just called Southern States to see if they have Tylan 50 injectible. They do but they said it's just for swine and cows. Don't people here use it on their chickens or is that a different Tylan? If this is the one I want, how much do I give the little guy. He's very tiny (but an adult).

Muscadine - Am going to try what you suggest when I get home from work today. Don't have time to do it now.

Okay, I did manage to check in his eye when I was washing it with saline solution. There's a bunch of white "gook" in there. Some came out and I was able to swab it away. Does this indicate a specific illness?

Hi Ellen - tried to pm you the other day but your box was full. The little SLW is keeping her eye open almost all the time now. It is still a little puffy so it is not all the way open but today it looks more open then yesterday and not irritated looking. I am wondering if it may be more of an injury. Maybe one of the others was pecking at some of their eyes? Just a thought.

just reread that, didn't mean to make it sound like you have some crazy eye pecking chick there ;-) What I was thinking is something along the lines of them being at the feeder and one of them trying to run some of the others off, if their heads are down, there is a good chance they might have been pecked in the eye.

How is our boy? Alot of the meds say they are for other animals but it is the same Tylan 50.. My vet said 1/4 cc twice a day.

BUT make sure you keep it refrigerated because I think I may have let mine ruin. I paid 12.95 for a 100ml bottle. I have never found the Tylan powder but I am going to get some so I have it and now I guess buy more Tylan in the bottle...sigh

My dh says for the amount of money I pay for meds I could replace the entire flock. UGH Thats why I am the moma LOL

Bex,

None have eye issues but I pm'd you which I'm sure you know by the time you read this.

Wanda,

I thought of that. I'm just not sure. I hope that's what it is and not some awful disease.

Mrs. 67,

Is your hen a standard or bantam. I haven't gotten the tylan yet because I just got home from work. Will pick it up today sometime. (biting fingernails cuz never gave an injection). The sweet boy seems just fine except for his eye. As I mentioned earlier, he's got a lot of white gook in it.

Thanks for your well wishes everyone.

Birdlover: Did the stuff that came out of the eye feel rubbery? Sounds like what happened to one of my babys.
After flushing the eye out with saline I gently pushed the eye from the beak back toward the head and the stuff causing the swelling came out. I then applied terramycin ointment and the next day the bird was fine. I placed the bird back with its mates and a couple of weeks later the other eye did the same thing. Come to find out the bird was getting pecked in the eye and I had to move it. No more problems since I moved the bird.
