Banty vs standard roo- who will do the deed with who?

CityGirl,

This is awful! I don't want your banty girls smushed either!

I think that dominant roo or not, any roo will try to have his way with a hen if he gets a chance. He may have to sneak and do it when the bossman isn't looking, but roos will be roos! Hopefully the big boy will decide that he prefers the big girls.

What do other people do? Separate the banties from the large fowl? If so, at what age does that become necessary? Certainly don't want to wait till you have a dead hen...

I would not let the big roo mate with the little bantams. I know someone who mixed her birds and the large roo broke the bantams leg and the bantam had to be culled

They are WAY to big for them IMO.

We have 2 banty roos in with 8 big girls and 10 little girls. The roos try to take care of everyone, not very successful with the big girls, but they do the rooster job and watch out for predators, find treats, keep ALL the girls safe. I have found a few of the big girl eggs that are fertile, and nearly all the little girl eggs are fertile. I would not put a standard roo in with the banties, but it seems to work out fine the other way!
